Description : By 1750 there was almost no space left in St. Matthew’s graveyard for burials. The Corporation purchased land off Bath Street known as Windmill Field and built what was called the Old Burial Ground. This became Walsall’s first municipal cemetery. The cemetery was surrounded by a brick wall, the first bricks being laid at a ceremony in March 1751.
