| Description | : | The nunnery dedicated to St. Bartholomew in Newcastle-upon-Tyne was founded in 1073 when monks from the south of England went to the site of Monkchester (an early name for Newcastle), where a religious settlement had been destroyed by the Danes. It is considered the oldest monastic institution in Newcastle. David, king of Scotland, and Henry I, king of England, were among its earliest benefactors.
