Description	:	Harris Cemetery is named after the Harris family, many of whom are buried here. It is said that the first burial here was a child who was run over by a wagon traveling through the area. The earliest known interments were Tommy Thomas (recorded as 1774), and then much later Martha A. Morris and A.J.W. in 1836. Many of the grave markers in Harris Cemetery have deteriorated and are difficult to read, and some graves appear to have originally been marked only with a rock. Read More	Harris Cemetery is named after the Harris family, many of whom are buried here. It is said that the first burial here was a child who was run over by a wagon traveling through the area. The earliest known interments were Tommy Thomas (recorded as 1774), and then much later Martha A. Morris and A.J.W. in 1836. Many of the grave markers in Harris Cemetery have deteriorated and are difficult to read, and some graves appear to have originally been marked only with a rock. The cemetery also contains many graves with no markers. An inventory of this cemetery's graves was completed sometime in the mid-1900s (Harris Cemetery, in Cemetery Records by Ellsberry, Vol. 3). Many unmarked graves were noted at that time. Most, if not all, of the grave markers in this cemetery were cut from the red sandstone outcropping just up the hill from Harris Cemetery on the east side of the gravel road. This same stone was also used for foundations, and all the barns, houses, tool sheds, and other buildings in Leslie Township and Fairfield Township were built with this stone foundation back in the time before concrete and cement blocks. Located one mile northwest of Mandeville, Missouri. CEMETERY HISTORY: The following was copied from a portion of "The Harris Cemetery" written by Carl W. Applebury, February 22, 1980, and shared by descendant, Donald Davies and Diane: "So many of our ancestors are buried here that I felt deserves a page of its own. "The Story told to me by my mother and others is that it was first used by a family from a Mormon wagon train on its way through Missouri. It is located at the foot of a rather steep and difficult hill just north west of Mandeville (Carroll Co.) Mo. A child that had fallen from one of their wagons while coming down this difficult hill died from its injuries and was the first to be buried there. "In the earlier days there was a trading post west of it known as The Buckskin Tavern. "When my Great Grandfather Allen Harris bought the land to the west which included the cemetery area he and his first wife my Great Grandmother Nancy lived there until she died. Her date of death is unknown but it is believed she is buried there in an unmarked grave. At that time commercial stones were difficult to obtain so native stones or wood was used as markers and of course have rotted or eroded away long ago." "Allen Harris remarried and he and his second wife Martha transferred the ownership of the cemetery land to be a public cemetery on March thirty first eighteen hundred and eighty. It was officially recorded April 12, 1880. It was then known as the Harris Cemetery." "Some time soon after this Allen Harris sold his farm and moved to Barton Co., MO. The people who later lived there were named Thomas and it became known as the Thomas Cemetery as most people thought it was only a family burial ground." "As years went by it was neglected and became very run down. Little or no fence remained and brush and prairie grass began to cover it. When I was small I remember going each year with my father to place an American flag on Grandfather Jonathan's grave on Decoration Day, he would cut away the tall grass with a scythe near the graves of my grandparents which I never knew as they died long before I was born. Conditions remained much the same until 1968 when due to the efforts of Tillie Applebury Mosher the Carroll County Court again designated it The Harris Cemetery and appointed trustees to care for it. Money was raised by donations of interested people, most of whom were the descendants of those buried there. Today it is quite well taken care of and looks rather nice." RELATED HISTORY: The following is a history of the immediate area taken from the book, Twentieth Century History of Carroll County Missouri, by S. K. Turner and S. A. Clark, 1911, pp. 137-138: "Leslie township contains its quota of thirty-six full sections of six hundred and forty acres each, a large portion of which is somewhat rough and broken, though the soil is very rich and productive and the township, as a whole, is one of the best of the county. It is a portion of what was originally called Morris township, which was so called in honor of James Morris, one of the earliest settlers who was proprietor of what in the early day was known as "Buckskin Tavern," which was located near the center of the north half of section 7, about one mile northwest of where Mandeville now stands. This old tavern was a famous stopping place in its day on the main road from DeWitt to Far West and was known for miles around because of the hospitality and generosity of its proprietor." (Note: Far West, a Mormon settlement in Caldwell County, Missouri, was the destination of every Mormon at this time in history, as there was no Nauvoo nor Salt Lake City yet.)
