Read More	This cemetery is located off of WV RT 80 in Logan County, West Virginia. The area was known as Christian before 1900 but was also called Elk Creek. Today it is widely known as Emmett. James Pine Christian and his family made their home in Christian/Elk Creek. The cemetery isn't widely known about except for a few locals. It is located in a obscure location and is not easily accessible. Due to coal mining in the area the roads have changed and the landscape is difficult to navigate. Before you are permitted to go on the property you will need to stop at the guard shack and take a 5 minute HAZMAT training. Some form of Identification is required. After the training is complete you will be permitted to enter the mine property. After you start up the road from the guard shack take the first left and follow the road up the hill. There is a huge beech tree that serves as a navigational point for the cemetery. Unfortunately there are no other landmarks except for an old rusty sign that might have said blasting zone at one time. From this point you will need to find a parking area for you vehicle off the roadway and begin making your way up the hill at the sign climbing toward the beech tree. There are some signs of a fence that once bordered the cemetery. Once you get on the cemetery, there is probably 50 or more graves but there are only a few marked. Some local residents say that it was the African American's cemetery who lived and worked in the mines in Elk Creek in the early to mid 1900's. They say the fence separated the Christian family and the colored community. I haven't found any evidence to suggest that this is true. From the headstones I have been able to identify most of them as direct descendants of James Pine Christian, therefore I named this cemetery for him. The locals call it Christian Branch Cemetery because that is the street name given to the roadway leading up to the cemetery. Please be aware this is a very steep climb and there is not a clear path to it you will navigate through brush and trees trying to access it and the cemetery is not maintained.
