Description	:	In 1629 six Irish nuns from the Poor Clare convent at Dunkirk returned to their native land and opened a house in Ship Street, Dublin. Shortly thereafter, the nuns were ordered to leave the city. They found refuge at a remote and isolated spot on the shores of Lough Rea, six miles from Athlone. Here they resumed their normal observance of the First Rule of St Clare, with the Constitutions of St Colette. In 1641 English soldiers pillaged the convent and set fire to the buildings. Some of the nuns fled to Wexford, others sailed to France and Spain. In 1649 fourteen of them founded a convent at Galway. In 1825 the present convent on Nuns’ Island was built. The deceased nuns are now memorialized on panels on an above-ground mausoleum. The cemetery is located behind the monastery.
