Description	:	Ann M. Hurley, 96, formerly of rural Volga, IA, died Sunday, February 15, 2009, at the Elkader Center, Elkader. Ann was born March 2, 1912, at the Moody farm, rural McGregor, Iowa. She was the daughter of Riley and Theresa Moody. She graduated from McGregor High School in 1929. Ann married her high school sweetheart, John O'Brien, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in McGregor, on February 8, 1930. To this union, one son, Thomas J. O'Brien, was born. Hurley, 96, formerly of rural Volga, IA, died Sunday, February 15, 2009, at the Elkader Center, Elkader. Ann was born March 2, 1912, at the Moody farm, rural McGregor, Iowa. She was the daughter of Riley and Theresa Moody. She graduated from McGregor High School in 1929. Ann married her high school sweetheart, John O'Brien, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in McGregor, on February 8, 1930. To this union, one son, Thomas J. O'Brien, was born. Ann was widowed at a young age when John O'Brien died at age 29 of a ruptured appendix in May of 1941. She took a job at the Mallard cafe in McGregor, where she met Timothy C. Hurley. Ann and Tim were married on October 16, 1947, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in McGregor. They moved to Minneapolis, MN, where a daughter, Helene, was born to this union. Ann, Tim and Helene moved to the original Hurley farmstead located north of Volga in 1951. Again, on April 4, 1959, Ann had to face the challenges of widowhood and being a single parent, when Tim Hurley died suddenly from a heart attack. Ann and Helene stayed on the farm and did all the chores associated with raising a small herd of beef cattle. Ann was especially proud of the numerous times when she would have the top selling market calves at the Elkader Sales Barn. She continued to live alone on her farm and maintain her cattle operation while Helene attended college, worked in western Iowa, and lived in Missouri. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Volga, where she was active in the Sacred Heart Altar and Rosary Society. Ann loved to play cards, especially 500, with family and friends. She loved celebrating birthdays and going out to eat with a group of Volga area ladies. She loved feeding the birds, hunting mushrooms and walking in the woods. Ann was especially proud of her wildflower garden which contained Ladyslippers, Yellowbells and Jack in the Pulpits. She took interest in national and world affairs and always subscribed to a daily newspaper. She never failed to vote in all elections. She cast her first vote for Franklin Roosevelt's reelection in 1936 and her final vote for Barack Obama in November 2008. Ann was a proud and active member of the Clayton County Democratic Party. She helped her daughter, Helene, walk door to door when Helene was elected Clayton County Recorder. Ann was preceded in death by her parents, Riley and Theresa Moody; her brother, Jim Moody; her sisters, Helen Milewsky and Kathryn Fritz; her son, Tom O'Brien; her daughter-in-law, Ann O'Brien and her son-in-law, Jack Magee. She is survived by her daughter, Helene Hurley Magee, Dubuque, and numerous nieces and nephews. She is also survived by beloved pets, "Tom the Cat" and a dog, Bess Truman Magee who stayed by her side during the time of Ann's passing. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105. Helene thanks all those who played a special role in Ann's final journey, especially the outstanding care give by the Elkader Care Center staff, in home care given by Cathy Sutter, Arlene Selzer, Anne Smith, Patty Zahina, the management and staff of Tower Living Center, Garnavillo and Cozy Corner Adult Day Care, Dubuque. Your kindness will never be forgotten.
