ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION: Arthur Forrest Kennedy was the 3rd of 13 children of Ern and Minta Kennedy. He was known as Forrest. He was born in 1900 in rural Kansas. He was average in height about five feet eleven inches and medium build with blue eyes, and light brown hair. He was born in a two story semi-dugout house. Like all of his 12 siblings, he attended the rural one-room Lone Tree School in Odessa Township until he completed the eighth grade. He attended the Odessa Church with his parents. After graduating from the eighth grade in 1914 he worked on the family farm for about nine years. He then worked for his Uncle Ira Barnett and his wife Anna on their farm near Otego, Kansas. He lived in a lean-to attached to the barn and had a pet Bull snake to keep the rodents out of the lean-to. He married Goldie Gibbs on April 14, 1924 and they farmed on rented land. They initially lived in Jewell County, Kansas. After Goldie’s doctor recommended that they move to a drier climate for her health, they moved in 1929 to Enders in Chase County Nebraska, where they rented a farm. They moved again to another farm about two miles from Imperial, Nebraska early in 1931. About February 1932 Forrest became a salesman for Standard Oil Company in Imperial, delivering oil, gasoline and kerosene to the farmers for their farming equipment. They moved into town at Imperial the summer of 1932. Sometime around 1932 to 1933 he was a salesman for the Maytag washing machine company. He became Chief of Police in Imperial about 1933. The town was very quiet and the Chief of Police had many jobs. He was chief over the volunteer firemen, checked the sewer plant daily, maintained the sewer lines, and drove a large truck that was rigged to clean the streets. Goldie and Forrest had seven children: Beth Geleene, June Maurine, Lila Gay, Rex Dale, Reta Lee, Viva Jean, Jack Don. Viva died at age 1 year 5 months in 1935 due to dust pneumonia from the dust storms in the 1930s. Goldie died from complications from pneumonia on September 14, 1936. Antibiotics were not available at that time. The children ranged in age from 4 months to 12 years at the time of her death. Before she died, she asked Forrest to promise to keep the children together and to make sure they all got a high school education. After Goldie’s death, the family stayed together during the school year and the children spent summers with various relatives in Kansas. Forrest married Violet Fay Marsh in October 1941 in Imperial. The family moved to Sumner, Washington in 1943 near where Violet’s brother lived. Forrest found a job as foreman for Mount Morency Farms. They later moved to nearby Tacoma. Forrest and Violet divorced in 1950. He married Mary I. Beale on September 22, 1953. During the years in the state of Washington, Forrest and his family lived in various houses in Sumner and Tacoma. Forrest died in his sleep at home on Monday June 13, 1960 in Sumner at the age of 60. The funeral service was held Friday June 17, 1960 at 11:00 am at the First Baptist Church with Rev. Wesley Fisher officiating. He was buried at Woodlawn Abbey Memorial, Sumner, Pierce County, Washington. Forrest liked working outdoors in wide open spaces and was a farmer most of his life.
