Asa was the mayor of Long Beach, California, from 1930 to 1933 and is often called "The Earthquake Mayor" because was mayor during the devastating earthquake on 10 March 1933. That earthquake left Long Beach in rubble and ruins and it was Asa's job to help turn that around. Asa was also a school teacher; worked in a lumberyard; a justice of the peace; studied law; and was part of many business ventures. Asa was also a school teacher; worked in a lumberyard; a justice of the peace; studied law; and was part of many business ventures. He was a member of the Freemasons; Scottish Rite Masons; Shriners; Toastmasters and was President of the Southern California Lumber Dealers for 3 terms. He lived in 1880 in Cambridge, Henry Co, Illinois; in 1900 in Volin, Yankton Co, South Dakota; in 1910-1920 in Wheeler, Lyon Co, Iowa; in 1930 in Long Beach, Los Angeles Co, California; and in 1938 in Seneca Falls, Seneca Co, New York. He was well traveled, both in the US and abroad. He married (1st) Hattie Price in 1897. She was the mother of their three children: Twins, Fern Dora Fickling and Donald Forrest Fickling, and Dorian Harland Fickling. Hattied died in 1926. Asa married (2nd) Marguerite G Somers on 26 Feb 1931. They had no children. ____________________________ Of note: Asa's grandson, Forrest E. Fickling (son of Donald Forrest) was the author of the "Honey West" novels, which later became a TV series.
