As grandma told the story many years later it was clear that the feeling was mutual on her part. Always properly chaperoned, they attended plays, church, and music events together. Then Clara's papa heard that she was keeping company with this young man and her papa instantly sent word for her to return home to West Point, Iowa, immediately. Obediently, but sorrowfully, Clara returned home. After a few weeks had passed a delivery person showed up at the door with a bouquet of roses from her beloved Bernhardt. Her papa still objected, refusing to allow her to accept the flowers, much less Bernhardt's request to be allowed to see her. Clara cried and begged her papa to allow her to keep the flowers and to see the young man whom she loved. Still her papa asserted a firm, unbending no - saying " When he send you something useful I will consider listening! Flowers are a silly waste of use of good money and show no common sense." With that the flowers were rejected. Again, a bit of time passed and then another gift and request arrived for Clara. Her papa allowed her to open the gift. It was a fine set of crochet needles and hooks. This time papa was pleased announcing " Well now he is showing some good sense. You may see him here." Thus Bernhardt visited Clara and eventually papa consented to their marriage. Ft. Madison Newspaper: THE EVENING DEMOCRAT; Ft Madison, IA 31 Oct 1922: B. J. OSBURG DIES FROM INJURIES Well Known Local Man Struck By Automobile Passes Away at Local Hospital Bernard J. Osburg, 2133 Eighth street [Avenue A] passed away at the Sacred Heart hospital yesterday afternoon at 4 o'clock. Death was the result of injuries received when the deceased was struck by an automobile near Oakland cemetery Sunday night. It was at first supposed that he would be able to withstand the injuries; but severe internal complications resulted in his death. At the time of his death he was 57 years of age and had been a resident of Lee County during the entire period of his life. He was a member of the Sacred Heart church and of the A.O.V.W. society. His tragic death is mourned by his widow [Clara Grothe-Osburg], two sons, Lawrence H. and Albert D. [Error: Correct is: Albert C.] and four daughters, Mrs. Clara Kron [Error: correct is: Mrs. Clare Kron...ie: Elizabeth Clara Osburg-Kron], Leah A., Esther H., and Celesta [Error: Clara E. not listed]. Funeral services will be held from the Sacred Heart church Thursday morning, November 2nd, at 9 o'clock, the Rev. Peter Hoffman officiating. Interment will be in Gethsemane cemetery.[Literally spoken: He was a pedestrian crossing a street and hit by a speeding drunk driver. It was never anticipated that he would survive the injuries as he had been struck so hard and dragged some 30 feet before the driver stopped.
