Schmidt of this city passed away at Postville Hospital at 1:30 o'clock on Monday morning at the ripe old age of eighty-two years, her demise being due to the failties incident to age. Deceased came to Postville some years ago from Richmond, Minn., and those who formed her acquaintance found her to be a most friendly and gracious lady, with a cheery greeting for all who chanced to come within the circle of her acquaintance. Dr. Schmidt of this city was her only child and during her somewhat extended period of failing health she has been given every tender and thoughtful care that a dutiful son could give. Deceased was a life long and devout member of the catholic church and died fortified by its rites. The funeral was held from St. Bridget's Catholic church in this city at 9 o'clock on Wednesday morning, Rev. P. Hogan officiating. Schmidt and Fred Benjegerdes, of Postville, were callers in town Monday. The Doctor was here to make arrangements for the funeral of his mother, who died at the Postville Hospital Sunday night. The funeral was held Wednesday morning at Postville and interment was made in the Catholic cemetery here. +++ Clayton County Register, IA, Thursday, March 16, 1933, pg. 3, col. 4 Mrs. Katherine Schmidt The remains of Mrs. Katherine Schmidt of Postville were brought to Garnavillo for burial and interment was made in the Catholic cemetery. Her final resting place in among the hills and near the home where she was born 82 years ago, and near where she spent her girlhood days. Those from out of town who accompanied her remains were the following: Dr. and Mrs. A. A. Schmidt and daughter Leila, Mr. and Mrs. George Spurgeon, Mrs. Jno Kernan, Miss Anna Leui, Mrs. Anna Shehy, Miss Cecelia Houdak, George Fay, Jack Horgan, James Steele, Dan and Ed McNeil, Jno. Gregg and Robert Hecker, Mr. and Mrs. Jno. Waters, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Abernathy, Mrs. Ed Durno, Mrs. Geo. Meier, Mrs. Ace Bush, of Postville; Dr. and Mrs. Ray Brandt of Clermont, Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Frommelt of Guttenberg, Mr. and Mrs. M. Miller, Misses Sarah and Regina Uriell and Delores Regan of Elkader. +++ Biography of her son (partial): Arthur A. Schmidt, MD The study of medicine affords to the student in that science a never-ending source for investigation and experiments. New remedies are being constantly discovered, steady progress is being made in surgery and new diseases are presenting themselves under varying forms of civilization. In the noble army of workers in this great field Dr. Schmidt takes a prominent place. He is a popular young physician of Garnavillo, Clayton County, and was born January 22, 1872, in Guttenberg, Iowa, the son of Dr. Henry and Catherine (Schulte) Schmidt. His father was born in Breslau, Germany, February 28, 1819. At the age of nine years he went to Edinburg, where he took a classical course and afterwards a course of study in Edinburg Medical College. After finishing his education he was appointed Medical Director in the English army and went to Australia; he remained there about two years, then went to San Francisco, Cal. In 1860 he returned to Breslau, his birthplace, to visit his brother and sister. After a visit of several years he returned to the United States and located in Brooklyn, N.Y., where he practiced at his profession for one year. In the year 1869 he came to Guttenberg, Iowa, where he made his home for five years, and from there he went to Mankato, Minn., where he resided for six years. In 1880 he moved to Richmond, Minn., where he spent the remainder of his days. He died of consumption in 1893. He was known as one of the best surgeons belonging to the State Medical Society and was the first Mayor of Richmond for two years. He also served as Coroner at the same place for six years. He was married in 1870 to Miss Catherine Schulte, a daughter of William Schulte, who died here in 1878. The mother of our subject is still living at Richmond, Minn. She was born in March, 1850. She has only one child and that is our subject.
