The resuscitation efforts of the squad drew praise from the County Attorney Donald Weaver, who said the efforts did not cease until a half hour after a physician had pronounced Mr. Smalley as dead. Cecil Gerald Smalley, eldest son of Lee and Edith Smalley, was born at Mt. Clare, Nebr., Sept. 24, 1911, and departed this life at Grand Island, Nebraska, Sept. 21, 1950, at the age of 38 years, 11 months and 28 days. When an infant Cecil was baptized in the Methodist faith. At the age of 13 he with his parents, moved to Oak, Nebr., where he attended both grade and high school. There he worked with his father as lineman for the Southern Nebraska Power Co. for a number of years. On July 21, 1931, he was united in marriage to Ada Belle Gillan of Oak. To this union was born one son, Donald Eugene. Cecil served a number of years as city electrician in Superior until he entered the armed service in March 1944 at Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas. From there he was sent to Camp Abbot, Ore., Camp Beal, Calif., Ft. Lewis, Wash. and Camp Swift, Texas. He sailed overseas in January 1945, landing in southern France, where he served as a corporal with the 1012 Treadway Bridge Co. until May 1945. He was with the army of occupation until April 1946 when he sailed for home. Cecil was awarded the EAMET Medall, the Good Conduct Medal and two battle stars. Mr. Smalley was a member of the American Legion and of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. After serving his country he, with his family, moved to Franklin, Nebraska, where he served as line superintendent for the rural electrification, later serving in that capacity at Nelson, Nebr. On Sept. 18, 1950 he was employed as a city electrician in Grand Island. There on Sept. 21 he met his untimely death. Besides his wife and son, he leaves to mourn his departure his mother, Mrs. Edith M. Biegert of Shickley, Nebr.; one sister, Maudie-Lee Frederickson, Los Angeles, Calif. His father preceded him in death June 5, 1935, and his brother Marvin on June 24, 1944. Cecil was a kind and loving father with a happy, genial disposition, and was always able to see the bright side of life. His friends were numbered by his acquaintances. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock in the Oak Community Church by Rev. Wallace of Geneva. The pallbearers were Claude Gillan, Jack Gillan, Harold Gillan, Cleo Roemmick, Harry Snyder and Willard Springer. Burial was made in the cemetery at Edgar, Nebraska.
