Description	:	Donald Earl Shafer, 70, of Grant, passed away Friday, June 16, 1978 at the Cass County Memorial Hospital in Atlantic, Iowa after several months illness. The son of Alexander and Anna Mary Shafer, he was born April 2, 1908 near Grant and was one of a family of ten children. He attended Montgomery County rural school and then remained on the farm to assist his father with the work. Read More	Donald Earl Shafer, 70, of Grant, passed away Friday, June 16, 1978 at the Cass County Memorial Hospital in Atlantic, Iowa after several months illness. The son of Alexander and Anna Mary Shafer, he was born April 2, 1908 near Grant and was one of a family of ten children. He attended Montgomery County rural school and then remained on the farm to assist his father with the work. He was united in marriage with Margaret Hendrickson on September 29, 1932 and to this union four sons were born: Bradley and Kent of Des Moines; Galen and Darrell of Grant. He was a member of the United Methodist Church. The Shafers were farmers after their marriage, then Donald drove a truck for Howell General Store of Lyman. In later years he drove the Grant school buss, retiring in 1973, and was presently residing east of Grant. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Harvey of California, Elver of Grant, and Max of Atlantic; sister, Mrs. Leslie (Beulah) Embree and Mrs. Jay (Bertha) Bryson of Grant; infant granddaughter, Kimberly Ann Shafer. Survivors are his wife, Margaret, four sons and their wives, 8 grandchildren, one brother Lloyd Shafer of San Diego, California; three sisters, Mrs. Hazel Ruhl of Grant, Velma Shafer of Atlantic, and Mrs. Altis (Marie) Bruce of Fredonia, Wisconsin; a host of there relatives and friends. Funeral services were held Monday p.m. at Grant United Methodist Church with Rev. Richard Fitch officiating. Mrs. Earl Spiker was organist and selections were, “Old Rugged Cross” and Face to Face.” Floral committee were Mr. and mrs. John Gustin and Mr. and Mrs. Clair Auxier. Ushers were Douglas Kenworthy and Roy Taylor. Pall bearers were his nephews, Jack Ruhl, Don Bryson, Lynn Shafer, Theron Shafer, Larry Shafer, and Dennis Hendrickson. Interment was in the Grant Cemetery, Grant, Iowa. Wolfe Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Villisca Review, Villisca, Iowa, Thursday, June 22, 1978, page 8
