He was born May 2, 1926, in Georgetown , a son of the late Edward and Ellen Smith Carraway. He was a graduate of Winyah High School and lived most of his life in Georgetown. He was an Army veteran of World War II with the 43rd Infantry Division. He served in the Pacific theater and was awarded the Purple Heart. Carraway GEORGETOWN -- Edward Haselden Carraway Jr., 70, died Tuesday, Nov. 12, 1996, at Georgetown Memorial Hospital. He was born May 2, 1926, in Georgetown , a son of the late Edward and Ellen Smith Carraway. He was a graduate of Winyah High School and lived most of his life in Georgetown. He was an Army veteran of World War II with the 43rd Infantry Division. He served in the Pacific theater and was awarded the Purple Heart. Mr. Carraway retired as director of the Georgetown County Emergency Preparedness Department after 30 years. He began in emergency management in 1952 working as a volunteer with the American Red Cross. He was part of the Red Cross brigade that responded to Hurricane Hazel in 1954. Mr. Carraway was a communicant of Prince George Winyah Episcopal Church and was a member of VFW Post 6444. He was also an honorary member of the Cotillion Club of Georgetown. Survivors include his wife, Joan de la Gorgendiere Carraway; a son, Edward Carraway III of Johns Island; a daughter, Noralyn Reese of Beaufort; and a granddaughter. A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in Prince George Winyah Episcopal Churchyard. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Georgetown County, P.O. Box 1436, Georgetown 29442, or Prince George Winyah Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 674, Georgetown 29442. e Georgetown chapel of Mayer Funeral Home is in charge.
