GEORGE M'KINLEY - PASSES AWAY TUESDAY" "Mrs. George McKinley, a resident of Humboldt for many years, died Tuesday morning, November 30, at 7:30 o'clock in her home at 518 South Ninth street, following a stroke of paralysis. She had been in ill health for several years. Effa Neff was born in Canfield, Ohio in 1861. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Eli Neff. She was married to George McKinley in Kansas City in 1908, returning to Humboldt to make their home. Mr. McKinley preceded his wife in death 10 years ago. Surviving are two sisters, Mrs. H.A. Brown of Iola and Mrs. Cora Young of Dallas, Texas, a brother, Omar Ness [sic Neff] whose address is unknown and two step-sons, Ben McKinley of Kansas City and Junior McKinley of Emporia. Several nephews and nieces including Floyd Brown of Iola. Funeral services will be held this Thursday afternoon, 2:30 o'clock at the Johnson Funeral Home with the Rev. J.C. Dussair, pastor of the Methodist church officiating. Burial will be in the Mount Hope cemetery. Mrs. Cora Young of Dallas has arrived to attend the funeral." OH, 16 Apr 1875 Transcribed by Jennifer Neff, 2005 "DIED In this city, on Wednesday morning April 14th 1875, in the fifteenth year of her age, Miss Ella, one of the twin daughters of Mr. Eli Neff. Our community has again been shocked by a very sudden death. This time one of the most interesting of the family is taken so suddenly that we can scarcely realize that she is dead. Ella was an unusually interesting child, and was admired by everybody that knew her. She had been complaining somewhat for ten days previous to her death, and was only confined to her bed one day. Thus has another loved one been snatched from a happy family circle. In such only a few short days ago that we saw her as she passed going to school, and she seemed a picture of health, beauty, and intelligence; always kind and affectionate to her associates; she was dear to us all. But now "there'll be one vacant chair." To Effie, her twin sister, we especially offer our most sincere sympathies; she will miss her dear sister most of all. And to the father, mother, sisters and brother we would say, "The Lord hath given and the Lord hath taken away; blessed to the name of the Lord." She has gone, we trust to that fair land where the bloom of a new birth will never fade from her cheeks. Health there will never be swallowed by disease. There the smile of her Savior will be the future of her soul forever, and there may we all – father, mother, sisters, brother and friends – meet her, when our pilgrimage on earth is ended." The Herald was a local newspaper for Mahoning Co. OH which included Canfield. It began publication in 1860. The Herald, like other papers, accepted through a courtesy act, some articles, including obituaries, from other sources or places. The obituary for Ella was probably contributed from the city where her death occurred. It is documented that the family moved from Canfield to Kansas in 1874. By the preponderance of evidence I (Jennifer Neff) believe she most likely died in Humboldt, Allen Co. KS. To date no marker has been located for her. Note: Her twin, Effa's obituary in 1937 would give them the birth year of 1961. 1900 US Census for Allen Co. KS gives birthdate of Mar 1861 for Effa. KS, Wed, 20 June 1908 p3 Provided by Janet and David Brooks, 2003 "MARRIED" (Sat, 16 June 1908) "George McKinley and Miss Effie Neff of this city, were married in Kansas City, Mo., Tuesday, June 16th, the Rev. Frank S. Arnold, pastor of the First Presbyterian church, performing the ceremony. The couple quietly left Humboldt Tuesday morning, and but few of their friends knew of their departure and marriage until the day after, although it was pretty generally believed they would be married soon. The groom is the old reliable Santa Fe agent at Humboldt and has held the position so long he seems to be a part of the Santa Fe system, and of course that means that he has given satisfaction. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Eli Neff, and is one of Humboldt's most estimable ladies. The happy couple have a large circle of friends who will wish them a married life full of happiness and prosperity. From Kansas City they went to St. Louis, and from there to Carlinville, Ills., where they will visit relatives. They will then go East, and visit Washington, D.C., New York City, Niagara Falls, and other places of interest and return home via Chicago. They will be gone about five weeks.
