Read More	The Nelson Gazette (Nelson, NE), Thursday, September 24, 1998; pg. 11 Elizabeth "Elli" Kroeger, was born in Neuhaldensleben, Germany, September 14, 1906, to Rudolf and Anna (Luddemann) Wittke. She passed away Tuesday, September 8, 1998, at the Nelson Good Samaritan Center, just short of her 92nd birthday. She came to American at the age of 17 and worked for families in the Byron, Nebraska, area while staying with a relative. She taught herself to read and write in English. August 14, 1931, she married Ernest Kroeger and they lived on a farm south of Byron, working the farm together. Four children were born to this union. Ernest and Elizabeth later left the farm and moved to Byron. Ernest died February 25, 1983, and Elizabeth continued to live in Byron until 1992. She then resided with her daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Roger Roe, near Superior, Nebraska. In 1995, she moved to the Nelson Good Samaritan Center. She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Byron and served as a member and officer of the Dorcus Circle. Elizabeth enjoyed gardening, needlework and cooking. She spent many hours sewing for her family. She was well known for her baking abilities, not only by her family, but by those in her community. Saturday mornings, she would deliver her baked goods to the local grocery store and by noon the shelves were always empty. She was able to return to her native land twice and visited relatives. Once with her husband in 1972 and again in 1992 in company of her son and daughter. Elizabeth enjoyed being with her family, particularly over the Christmas holiday season, when she would delight in fixing them a traditional German Christmas meal. She left a rich heritage to her family of love, a love for Jesus, stories from her past, and the knowledge of a fulfilled happy life. Preceding her in death, in addition to her husband, were an infant daughter, Margret (sic) Elaine in January 1937; her parents; four brothers, Rudolf, Frank, Henry, and Bill; two sisters, Frieda and Marianne; one daughter-in-law, Ilse; and one grandson, Jeffrey Eugene Roe. Survivors include one son, Martin E. Kroeger of San Antonio, Texas; two daughters, Marjorie Ann Dunne of Costa Mesa, California, and Carol June Roe and her husband Roger of Superior, Nebraska; three grandchildren, John Roe and his wife Sandi of Topeka, Kansas, Angela Hilgendorf and her husband Erick of Joplin, Missouri, and Shannon Breckner and her husband Dennis of Costa Mesa, California; five great grandchildren, Randee and Ryan Roe, Eric, Zachary and McKenzie Hilgendorf; and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Frances Wittle of Denver, Colorado, Raymond and Hilda Marquart of Superior, Nebraska, Edna Kroeger of Byron, Nebraska, and Otto and Lillie Kroeger of Lincoln, Nebraska. Funeral services were held Monday, September 14, 1998, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Byron with Pastors Howard Schroeder and Sam Reed officiating. Music was provided by Mrs. Max Eggers, organist, and Lee Rodehorst sang a solo, "Gott Ist Die Liebe". The congregational hymn was "How Great Thou Art". Interment was in St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery at Byron. Casketbearers were Scott Wittke, Phillip Schueter, Todd Kroeger, Leon Marquart, Tom Kroeger and Joel Wittke. Melby Mortuary of Mankato, Kansas, was in charge of the arrangements.
