Mrs. Elizabeth Bittenbender was born in Ponca, Nebraska, February 27, 1872, and lived there until she grew to womanhood. She attended the public schools in Ponca and then went to Carthage College at Carthage, Illinois. In 1882, she married Stephen K. Bittenbender, and to them were born two sons, mentioned above. After several years in Nebraska, the Bittenbender family moved to California, near San Jose, and later they moved back to Missouri for a few years. In 1902 they came to Willits, where the Northwestern Redwood Company was just getting under way with a new sawmill. Mr. Bittenbender entered the employ of that company and stayed with them as long as they were in business here. For many years he was superintendent of the mill at Northwestern. Mr. Bittenbender passed away in 1929 in Berkeley, where he made his home after retiring from business. After the death of her husband, Mrs. Bittenbender came to Willits again and has made her home here with her son, Duane, most of the time since. She was able to look after herself practically all of the time and took pride in so doing. Mrs. Bittenbender was a member of the Lutheran church and of the Rebekah and Eastern Star lodges of this city. Besides her two sons, she is survived by three grand-children, William Bittenbender of Hilo, Hawaii, Mrs. Harriett Colbran of San Gabriel, and Mrs. Jessie Ladd of Hollister, who is at present in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. Also one great grand-child, Christine Duane Colbran of San Gabriel. Funeral services were held at the Anker Funeral Chapel Tuesday afternoon with Rev. J. H, Howe officiating. Interment followed at Chapel of the Chimes in Oakland. NOTE: Lizzie Stough Bittenbender was the second daughter born to Solomon and Helena (Ernst) Stough of Ponca.
