She had asthma, congestive heart failure and a kidney ailment. Mrs. Elgin, who lived in Silver Spring, came to Washington in 1924 and attended the Washington School for Secretaries and George Washington University. From 1925 to 1935, she was a secretary in the Washington patent law firm of Byrnes, Townsend & Brick. During World War II, she was a Red Cross "gray lady" volunteer at Bethesda Naval Hospital and a secretary and assistant with the Draft Board and the Army Ordnance Corp. From 1960 to 1968, she was a secretary and administrative aide with the National Bureau of Standards. She had been a volunteer at Chevy Chase Elementary School from 1944 to 1957. She had served on the ladies' guild of All Saints Episcopal Church at Chevy Chase Circle. Mrs. Elgin was born on a farm in upper Montgomery County. She lived in Chevy Chase before moving to Rossmoor Leisure World in the 1970s, and then, in 1982, to the Bedford Court Marriott assisted-living facility in Silver Spring. She was a 1924 graduate of Poolesville High School, a class that also included Arthur Elgin, whom she married in 1933. He died in 1982. Survivors include three sons, Arthur Jr., of Gaithersburg, Laurence Allnutt Elgin of Annandale and Clifford Thomas Elgin of Louisville; and seven grandchildren.
