Description	:	Evelyn Miller Shipe, 94, of Mathias, WV, passed away peacefully on Tuesday August 25, 2009. During more recent years, she had been a resident of Grant County Nursing Home, Petersburg, WV. Born May 6, 1915 at The Miller Homeplace, Lost City, WV, she was the daughter of the late Jesse F. During more recent years, she had been a resident of Grant County Nursing Home, Petersburg, WV. Born May 6, 1915 at The Miller Homeplace, Lost City, WV, she was the daughter of the late Jesse F. Miller and Lillian (Marshall) Miller. She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond M. Shipe on Oct. 15, 1988, two sons; Lowell "Jack" Shipe, Aug. 27, 2001 and Donald R. Shipe, May 27, 2003, and a sister; Ruth Barr of Fisher, WV. As there was no high school in the Eastern area of Hardy County, in order to obtain an education, students who could, "went away" for grades 9-12. Therefore, Evelyn lived with relatives or family friends and attended one year each at St. John's Academy in Petersburg, WV, Moorefield High, Morgantown High and graduated from Triplett High School in Mt. Jackson, VA in 1933. Evelyn was a lifetime member of the Lost City Baptist Church where she served as Secretary/Treasurer for many years. She and her family were also active in the Garrett's Chapel congregation, Mathias, WV. Especially influential in Evelyn's early life was the West Virginia University 4-H Club program which she participated in at the local, state, and national levels with her projects and demonstrations. In her adult life, she continued with 4-H involvement by being a lifetime volunteer leader of the Bowman 4-H Club for 25 years. She is a member of the West Virginia 4-H All Stars. Evelyn was also a longtime member of the Lost River WVU Extension Farm Women's Club and a Charter member of the Mathias Volunteer Fire Women's Auxilary. While living at the Grant County Nursing Home, Evelyn served as President of the Resident's Council for several years. She and Raymond raised their family at her beloved Miller Homeplace while he taught school and later became a full time farmer in the area. She did beautiful sewing, enjoyed family and school gatherings, was a caregiver to several family members and until recent weeks, was an avid reader. Surviving are a son; Gaylon N. Shipe of Petersburg, two daughters; Annette (Shipe) Boggs and husband Howard of Keyser, Elaine Miller Shipe of Franklin, three grandchildren; Debbie McNett, Sherry Lough, and Daryl Shipe all of Virginia, five great grandchildren, a younger sister; Lois Kennedy of Laurel, DE whom she helped raise, and two daughters-in-law; Maxine Shipe and Evelyn Marie Shipe. The Rev.'s Jonathan Hedrick and Larry Cantu will conduct a funeral service Saturday 11:30 AM at Garretts Chapel United Methodist Church in Mathias. Burial will follow at the Miller Cemetery in Mathias. The family will receive friends Friday from 6-8 PM at the Grandle Funeral Home in Broadway.
