Mohler. He was cleaning up after the day's work and had completed shaving and put away his shaving accessories, leaving them in the neat arrangement which had been his custom. His parents, who were in the livingroom down stairs heard the sound of something fall and thinking the noise came from outside, looked out into the street to ascertain the cause. Not seeing anything, Mrs. Mohler's first thought was of "Ted." Mr. Mohler rushed up stairs and found him dead. "Ted" had not been in his usual health all summer and three weeks ago, when lifting a bathtub in the course of his day's work, he felt something in his chest pull loose. After feeling ill at ease for a week he consulted a doctor, who gave him a thorough examination and took several X-rays. The doctor told him he had split the aorta, the main blood vessel, leading from the heart, and that he might live two weeks or two years, he could not say. The aorta was explained to him to be in the nature of a tire, with the outer casing cut and the innertube bulging through. This was his condition but he had not revealed it to his parents. After the examination had been completed he told them that his heart was somewhat enlarged. Carefully keeping his condition to himself he hoped to save his parents the worry, which he knew would be theirs, little dreaming that in such a short time he would be called away from the home, where his arrival was eagerly awaited by the members of the family who enjoyed his good natured teasing and his happy, carefree ways. Fred William Mohler was born, September 23, 1886, in Grant township, Carroll county and has lived in this city since 1890 when his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.B. Mohler, established their home in Carroll. He attended the Carroll schools and was graduated from the high school in 1905. Following his graduation he learned the plumbing trade from Robt. Hamilton and worked for him until he enlisted in the army in December 1917, joining Company D, 24th Engineers. He went to France in March 1918 and returned to the states in June 1919, when he received his honorable discharge. Returning to Carroll he bought the plumbing business of the Robert Hamilton estate. Mr. Hamilton having died in the interim. He was one of the foremost workers of his trade, and has installed the plumbing in many of the largest buildings and homes in Carroll and the surrounding country. When he undertook a job he put into it the best of workmanship and material and his employer had confidence in him and his work. "Ted," as he was best known, had no enemies, he would not permit himself to dislike anyone to the point of making an enemy. He liked his fellowmen and found pleasure in his association with his friends. Cut off in the vigor of life, he was unable to accomplish many of the things he had planned and wanted to do, but he has left a memory of service in his work and steadfastness and sincerity to his fellowmen, which will live on through the years. Surviving are his parents, a brother, Walter Mohlor and three sisters, Miss Grace Mohler, at home; Mrs. Cora Ross, Des Moines; and Miss Wilma Mohler, instructor of music in the Winterset schools. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the Methodist Church, Rev. Arthur M. Eastman, officiating. The American Legion accorded their comrade military honors. The pallbearers were W.J. Schmich, Al Schmich, Al Salman, N.M. Mackey, Joe Manor, and Henry Walz. Relatives attending the funeral from out of town were Mr. and Mrs. C.M. Mohler and daughter, Eagle Grove; Mrs. Anna Wheeler and two daughters, Eagle Grove; Mr. and Mrs. Casdorf, Worthington, Minn.; Mrs. Henry Appel, Worthington Minn.; John Beechel and son, Washington, Wis., Mr. and Mrs. Jatho and family of Holstein.
