Description	:	Hale William Stevenson, an active member of the Durham Friends Meeting for more than 30 years, died on July 15, 2007. He was born March 6, 1913, on a farm near Fairfield, Iowa. His parents were Brierly John and Grace Amy Lambert Stevenson. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Mary Charlotte Derry Stevenson; and an infant son, Phillip Hale Stevenson; sisters, Vesta Stevenson Crown, Verlyn Stevenson Gilbert Condit and Wanita Stevenson Hawkins; and brothers of his first wife, Leighton Roy Derry, Max Monroe Derry and Lewis Eldon Derry. He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Fredda Cashion Bateman Stevenson of the home; sisters of his first wife, Wayve Derry Mann and her children of Oklahoma City, Okla., and Norma Ruth Derry Hiles and her children of Lamoni, Iowa; his son, Karl William Stevenson and his wife, Kathryn Carver Stevenson, of Durham; his grandson, Matthew William Stevenson, his wife, Nadine Badger Stevenson, and his great-granddaughter, Cecelia Grace Stevenson of Philadelphia; his stepson, Kenneth Bateman, his son, Corey Bateman and his wife, Samantha, grandson, Xander Bateman and granddaughter, Sophia Bateman, of Fort Worth, Texas; his stepdaughter, Kay Bateman Doggett and her husband, Jack, of Flagstaff, Ariz.; and her daughter, Lindsey Doggett LeCuyer, her husband, Andy, and her granddaughter, Hanna LeCuyer , of Fort Worth, Texas. Hale grew up in Lamoni, Iowa, where he graduated from Lamoni High School, attended Graceland College and married Mary Charlotte Derry in 1933. They were happily married until her death after a long illness in 1972. Hale worked in the Motor Transportation Industry for 75 years before "retiring" at age 88. He was made a member of the Society of Automotive Engineers in recognition of his innovative contributions to the design and manufacture of industry standard long-haul truck tractors and truck tires. Over the years, Hale and Charlotte assumed responsibility for six foster children. He was active in the work of Friends Meetings in Charlotte, N.C., Cincinnati, Ohio and Durham, N.C., from 1961 to 2007. He served on the Board of Carolina Friends School. He married Fredda Cashion Bateman in 1973. They were happily married until his death. He worked on more than 100 Habitat for Humanity homes before "retiring" from the "Geezers" when he was 92. On his 90th birthday, he said, "There is always more work to do. Work is good for you. I like to work. Anything worth starting is worth finishing. Anything worth doing is worth doing well." Hale was blessed with good health, a sound mind, the will to serve others, and the strength and ability to do constructive work until he suffered a stroke in February, 2007. He died comfortably in The Pavilion at Croasdaile Village. He leaves to mourn, his family and a multitude of grateful and loving friends and colleagues who benefited from his life of active service to others. His body has been donated to the education of future physicians at Wake Forest University Bowman Gray School of Medicine. His family expresses their gratitude and appreciation for the attentive and respectful palliative care that he received from Hospice and the staff of the Pavilion at Croasdaile.
