The Jefferson Herald, published in Jefferson, Iowa on Thursday, June 6th, 1946; Page 1 Contributor: Hooked On Family (47448897) *********** Harriet Amelia Meyer, daughter of Conrad and Ursula (Schoquet) Smith, was born Nov. 5, 1862 in Cook County, Illinois and departed this life on June 5, 1946, bringing her age to 83 years and 7 months. She came to Iowa with her family when she was 11, making her one of the oldest settlers of Paton. She often spoke of the conditions of pioneer days. She was educated in Illinois and completed her education in Paton. Her parents reserved one room for school purposes. In her young womanhood, she consecrated her life with her useful talents to the Lord, and proved to be a faithful, consistent Christian. She was married Oct. 4, 1883 to Ameil Meyer and located on his farm north of town. They had four children: Ida May, Celia Elnora, Floyd Alfred and Mabel M. She was a charter member of Salem UMC and was able to furnish the history of the early beginning of the church at the time of dedication of the present church. She was greatly interested in various church activities, especially missions. She organized a Woman's Missionary Society with six women, and she was president for twelve years. Today there are 34 members. She also organized the Young Ladies' Bible class, then a Young Men's class and taught those for three and twelve years respectively. Education was also upon her heart, especially of the ministry. She gave $1000 to the Theological Seminary at Naperville. She made another pledge, namely to give a definite amount of her income in support of the cause of missions, which she kept for 36 years. The unexpected news that she was a "Gold Star" mother caused her health to fail rapidly, but she was resigned to the will of God. She leaves to mourn, her daughters: Ida May Pemble, Celia Elnora Wolf, Mable Meyer, one daughter-in-law, two sons-in-law, one grandson, one sister, one brother, many nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends. Her husband preceded her. Service was 3:00 June 9 at Salem Evangelical Church in Paton with burial in Paton Cemetery.
