Gottlieb Rulla and Martha Marie nee Lehrack, was born October 26, 1915 at Sterling, Nebr. November 25 she was baptized by Rev. H. Wunderlich of St. John Lutheran church of Sterling, and on March 24, 1929 she was confirmed by Rev. J. H. Moehl. She attended Sterling public schools and was graduated from Sterling high school in 1932. During those years she also attended St. John Lutheran church, and took an active part in the Luther League and as a Sunday school teacher. Teaching was her chosen profession and for five years after graduation she taught in rural schools near Sterling, then in Sterling grade school until January of 1943 when she enlisted in the United States Coast Guard Spars. During her service in the Spars she was commissioned ensign junior grade and later lieutenant. In March 1946 she received her honorable discharge. Upon completion of military service she enrolled in the University of Nebraska, and with earlier credits earned at Peru State Teachers College, Madison State University in Wisconsin, and University of Nebraska, she graduated with a bachelor of arts degree in June 1947. Immediately after that she accepted a position in the Seattle, Washington, school system, but continued with her own education and received a master's degree from the University of Washington in 1952. Three years later she received a national honor when she was chosen as an exchange teacher from Washington state to Washington, D. C. In 1958 she went abroad for a year to teach the children of armed forces personnel in West Germany. Returning to Seattle in 1959 she resumed her teaching duties in that city and continued in that capacity until October when failing health made it physically impossible for her to continue with the task she loved so well. Her great interest in education was indicated by her memberships in National Education Association, Washington State Education Association, and the Delta Kappa Gamma sorority. Miss Rulla's membership was transferred from St. John's in Sterling to Queen Anne Lutheran church of Seattle, where she worked faithfully for her Lord. She was hospitalized during her final illness in November, and her brother Landis went from Sterling to be with her at that time, remaining in Seattle until her death November 25, 1962 at the age of 47 years and 29 days. Surviving are five sisters and one brother: Mrs. Godfrey (Agnes) Straube, Sterling; Mrs. A. H. (Clara) Kimball, Lincoln; Mrs. J. T. (Frieda) Hestermann, Adams; Mrs. Cornelius (Hilda) Remmenga, Sterling; Mrs. R. F. (Edith) Decker, South Haven, Mich.; Landis A. rulla, Sterling. Other survivors include one aunt, Mrs. O F. Cooke, Scottsbluff, an uncle, F. C. Rulla, Tecumseh, and many nephews, nieces and cousins. Funeral services were conducted in St. John American Lutheran church in Sterling Saturday afternoon by the Rev. Kenneth rust. Mrs. John Goldenstein was organist and Mrs. Harvey Giesmann was soloist. Pallbearers were Harvey Giesmann, Raymond Schmidt, Dellen Berg, Belden Christline, Marvin Heusman and Richard Rosenthal. Military services were conducted at the graveside. She was laid to rest in the Sterling cemetery.
