Description	:	ASHTON, HERBERT LEE — Herbert L. Ashton, formerly of Geneva, died suddenly following a heart attack at Ventura, Cal., September 8, 1953. Herbert Lee Ashton, was born June 14, 1896, to Frank and Cora Ashton at Geneva, Neb. He was reared and educated in Geneva. In April, 1917, he married Marion Johnston of Geneva, daughter of Mrs. Susan Johnston, in Omaha, while in the armed service during World War I. Read More	ASHTON, HERBERT LEE — Herbert L. Ashton, formerly of Geneva, died suddenly following a heart attack at Ventura, Cal., September 8, 1953. Herbert Lee Ashton, was born June 14, 1896, to Frank and Cora Ashton at Geneva, Neb. He was reared and educated in Geneva. In April, 1917, he married Marion Johnston of Geneva, daughter of Mrs. Susan Johnston, in Omaha, while in the armed service during World War I. After his discharge Mr. and Mrs. Ashton homesteaded in Montana near Miles City. Returning to Geneva for a few years, they later located in Hastings. To this union were born three children, Courtney Sue, now Mrs. Bert Vickery of Hastings, Charles Franklin of Deerfield, Ill., and Marion Josephine, now Mrs. Franklin Emmons of Hastings. Mrs. Ashton died in Hastings in March, 1930. Nine years later in Provo, Utah, he married Elsie Kopp. They had one son, Richard Gary, of Provo. Later he moved to the west coast, where he had lived the last 13 years. He recently married Lela Lawhead of Ventura, Cal. Surviving are his wife, mother, four children and five grandchildren. Lyman Brooke of Geneva is an uncle and Mrs. Maude Stringfield is an aunt. During Mr. Ashton's days in Geneva high school, he was an excellent athlete and student. He was a member of Geneva's state championship high school basketball team in 1913. He graduated in 1916. He was an honorable soldier and a worthy citizen. His desire for the better companionship of life led him to become a member of the Ancient and Honorable Order of Free Masons. The body was accompanied to Geneva by the wife and mother. Funeral services were held at the Hrubesky-Farmer funeral home in Geneva at 11 a. m. Saturday, September 12. Dr. F. E. Pfout officiated. Pallbearers were Joseph Bixby, John Bixby, John Brooke, Harold Heath, John Koehler and Norman Wright Sr. Interment was in the Geneva cemetery. Source: The Nebraska Signal September 1953
