Description	:	Sad and sudden was the death of Miss Ida M. Cockayne, a popular young Burlington lady, which occurred last evening in a runaway four miles west of town. Miss Cockayne is a dressmaker employed by Mrs. Sheagren, and yesterday received word that there was work for her at the home of William Magel, on the Agency Road. The latter's son, Albert, came for the young lady at her home, No. 1317 Agency Avenue, about 7:30 last evening, and together they started for the Magel home in an open-seated buggy, drawn by two family horses. On the Agency... Read More	Sad and sudden was the death of Miss Ida M. Cockayne, a popular young Burlington lady, which occurred last evening in a runaway four miles west of town. Miss Cockayne is a dressmaker employed by Mrs. Sheagren, and yesterday received word that there was work for her at the home of William Magel, on the Agency Road. The latter's son, Albert, came for the young lady at her home, No. 1317 Agency Avenue, about 7:30 last evening, and together they started for the Magel home in an open-seated buggy, drawn by two family horses. On the Agency Road, just as they were nearing their destination, the horses were frightened by wood which had fallen on the road and, becoming unmanageable, ran away, the united efforts of both occupants being unable to restrain them. After about a hundred yards the frenzied animals turned sharply across the road in front of the Philcosky place and started up the embankment, throwing both Miss Cockayne and Mr Magel from the vehicle. Miss Cockayne fell head foremost, her neck evidently having been broken. She died almost instantly, without uttering a word. Young Magel escaped with but a few bruises and cuts and will be able to be out in a few days. Coroner Unterkircher was telephoned and, accompanied by the dead girl's mother and brother, drove to the scene of the accident. Mrs. Cockayne had been somewhat prepared for a shock, but broke down completely on seeing her daughter. The body was removed to the city. The accident is a particularly sad and distressing one. Miss Cockayne is widely known and popular in Burlington, and the news of her sudden and tragic end will cause genuine regret among a large circle of friends. She was but twenty-one years old, and a member of St. Patrick's Church. She leaves a widowed mother and two brothers, one residing in Omaha. Burlington Hawkeye, 04 Jan 1900
