Description	:	Brevard - James Elzie Barton, 81, a lifelong resident of Transylvania County, climbed those final stairs after a lengthy illness on the morning of Oct. 30, 2005, leaving behind his family and friends. Read More	Brevard - James Elzie Barton, 81, a lifelong resident of Transylvania County, climbed those final stairs after a lengthy illness on the morning of Oct. 30, 2005, leaving behind his family and friends. He was born April 28, 1924, in a logging camp in what is now the White Pines recreation area of Pisgah National Forest. He left home when he was eight years old and went to work on the Whitmire farms in the Cherryfield community where he worked until he entered the U.S. Army in November 1942. He was awarded the Purple Heart, the Combat Infantry Badge and the Good Conduct Medal while serving as a squad leader with the 91st Infantry Division during World War II. He fought in three major campaigns in the Mediterranean Theater. He was discharged as a Sergeant in November 1945. After his discharge he returned to Transylvania County and worked in the pulpwood and logging industry for the next 18 years. At that time he decided to make a career change. He trained and began working as a plumber. He continued working at this occupation until he retired. James was preceded in death by his father, Elzie Barton, his mother, Rossie Barton and his sister, Naomi Barton of the Cathey's Creek community. He leaves behind his wife, Flossie Leona Barton and his loving children: daughter, Ida Rogers and Lynn Tyler and sons, Robert Barton and James C. "Jake" Barton. He is also survived by six grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. One of his famous quotes was "Old soldiers never die, they just fade away." The graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Cathey's Creek Cemetery with the Revs. Gene Gilliam and Claude Nicholson officiating. A memorial service will follow at Cherryfield Baptist Church, of which he was a member. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Transylvania County, P.O. Box 1116, Brevard, NC 28712. Moody-Connolly Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
