Description	:	John Joseph Gaffney was born Sept. 27, 1933, at Lamont IA, the son of John Philip Gaffney and Florence Meyer Gaffney. He attended school in Lamont and graduated high school in 1952. He entered the U.S. Army in 1954, served during the Korean Conflict, and was honorably discharged in 1956. John married Virginia Wink(d/o Letha HANSEL-WINK) Nov. 22, 1958, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Manchester. He entered the U.S. Army in 1954, served during the Korean Conflict, and was honorably discharged in 1956. John married Virginia Wink(d/o Letha HANSEL-WINK) Nov. 22, 1958, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Manchester. To this union were born seven children: James Joseph, Jerry Lee, Mary, Margaret, Pam, David D. and Michael A. They moved to Lamont after their marriage and lived there all 47 years of their marriage. John farmed and also worked at the Wilson/Farmstead meat packing plant in Cedar Rapids for 34 years, retiring in 1991. He was an active member of the Lamont American Legion, enjoyed chopping wood and camping. He will be remembered for his generosity toward others. John "Jr" Gaffney entered into his eternal rest Sunday, Oct. 15, 2006, at Veterans' Hospital in Iowa City IA, following a brief illness. He was 73 years of age. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons: David D. and Michael A., both in infancy; one grandson Aaron Ritzman and one great-grandson Darren Gerdeman; four brothers: LaVerne, Richard, Gilbert, and Ronald Gaffney; and daughter-in-law Deborah Gaffney. Survivors include his wife Virginia of Lamont; two sons: James and Jerry of Lamont; three daughters: Mary (Leonard) Ritzman of Anamosa, Margaret (Duane) Landis of Arlington, and Pam (Randy) Schmidtke of Lamont; 14 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends. Funeral services were 10:30 AM Wednesday, Oct. 18, 2006, in St. Mary's Catholic Church at Strawberry Point with Rev. Paul R. Peters officiating. Military graveside services were conducted by the Lamont American Legion at St. Albert's Cemetery east of Lamont. Fawcett Funeral Home in Lamont handled the arrangements.
