John Poole, Jr. was the great-grandson of Richard Poole, the English immigrant who married Johanna Duvall and Mary Phelps. His father, John Poole, Sr., and his uncle Joseph Poole, Sr. (a minister of the Established Church of England) also came to America, but Joseph later returned to England. The two brothers came to this area from Anne Arundel County, Maryland, later appeared in the land records office at Annapolis. John Poole apparently bought 160 acres from Charles Hoskinson's 498-acre tract called "Elizabeth's Delight" and had it resurveyed in 1769 into "Pooles Rectification"; 90 acres to John and 70 acres to Joseph. They later had it resurveyed, John called his "Pooles Right" and Joseph calling his "Pooles Hazard". [Note: it is believed that Charles Hoskinson's wife, Elizabeth, was the sister of Richard Pooles' first wife, Johanna Duvall. In 1793, John Poole, Jr. used a 15-acre tract that he received from his father to build a log store and subsequently subdivided the tract, selling portions to a number of other merchants, thus establishing the settlement of Poolesville. The store is still standing. John was an Episcopalian and a very religious man, always calling in his servants to family prayers and teaching them on Sundays from the Book of Common Prayer. At the time of his death he was registrar and lay reader of the parish. The first entry in the parish records, in 1799, when it was Prince George parish, is in his handwriting. Reinterred from the Frederick Procorus Hays farm on 6 October 1917.
