Read More	SCHELKOPF, JOSEPH EDGAR JOE--Joseph (Joe) Edgar Schelkopf was born to Edgar Joseph Schelkopf and Essie Mae Crowley on March 28, 1929, in Martland, and passed away on Saturday, July 28, 2007, at Fillmore County Hospital in Geneva at the age of 78 years, 4 months. He was the youngest of five children. Joe grew up loving his life on the farm. He learned how to appreciate wild life and what the heartland had to offer at a very early age. Joe attended county School District 93 through the third grade. In 1937, his family moved to Geneva where he finished his schooling. One of Joe’s best experiences was when Henry Newman took him under his wing and taught him the shoe repair and leather trade. He worked for him for four years during WWII. The soldiers from the Fairmont airbase kept him busy, putting new soles and heels on their boots. As WWII came to an end, Joe started helping Art Brabham, a plumber located across the street from the shoe shop. He taught Joe plumbing, heating, sheet metal and electrical work—which in turn, assisted Joe in obtaining employment in Lincoln while he was attending Nebraska Wesleyan University. Joe graduated from NWU with a double major in biology and industrial arts education. Joe’s dream was to receive a doctoral degree and become a nuclear engineer, but as times were tight, he needed to find full-time employment. He felt very fortunate to receive a job in Utica teaching industrial arts, math and science; he also assisted with the senior yearbook. In October of 1951, he was drafted into the Korean War and served on front-line maintenance. Following the war, he returned to Geneva and purchased the plumbing and heating business from Mr. Brabham; this was the beginning of Schelkopf Engineering where he continued to work for over 50 years, until May of 2007. On March 6, 1955, Joe married Joan Clara Pittard at the Geneva United Methodist Church. Four children and ten grandchildren kept Joe and Joan’s calendar full, but there was nothing more important to them than family. Time with family included many trips in the camper, boating on summer weekends, hunting and fishing with kids and grandkids, and snowmobiling (including up telephone poles and through dense blue spruce). Holiday traditions of spending time with extended family were something he looked forward to with great anticipation and excitement. For 35 consecutive years, he enjoyed spending the opening morning of duck season with his son, John, and friend Dr. Richard Callahan. Joe also enjoyed watching and coaching his children’s sporting events, attending their music concerts and contests, and cheering on his grandchildren from the bleachers or lawn chair. Joe was very involved in the Geneva United Methodist Church. He especially enjoyed participating in the construction of the new church and fellowship hall. Bible Study and Sunday school classes were very important to him. He never tired of learning more and growing hi his faith. One of his favorite things to do was to share the children’s sermon. Over the past few years, Joe played banjo with very special friends—John, J.R. and Roger—as part of the “29ers.” Performing, telling stories and making new friends with these three men were constant highlights in his life. He also attended country music festivals as often as possible; he especially loved to enter the song-writing contest at each festival. His songs were based on God, faith, country, personal experiences and his family. As many people have commented, Joe had a great gift of teaching and storytelling. (You could always find a musical instrument and small amp in the trunk of his car!) Joe believed that each of us live a life that is a story. He never let opportunities pass him by during his stay here on earth. He felt all opportunities were God’s gifts to us, but eventually God leaves it up to us to use them to the level we wish. He was always thankful to his parents who took the time to show him the importance of simple things; he truly led an exciting, interesting, and fun-filled life! Joe is preceded in death by his wife, Joan Clara (Pittard) Schelkopf, his parents, and his sisters, Fern Schelkopf, Ruth (Mrs. Red) Hedden, Judy (Mrs. Kenneth) Allen and Maxine (Mrs. Jake) Bornschlegl. Joe is survived by his children and their families: Jan Renee Schelkopf, Erick Thomas, Matthew Joseph and Daniel John Treadway; John Joseph Schelkopf and wife, Doreen (Davis), Shelby Marie, Sydney Jo, Jacquelyn Joan and Ty John; Julie Ann (Schelkopf) Timmerman and husband Mark; Jennifer Jo (Schelkopf) Stengel and husband, Kris, Kristian Dean, Eli Theodore and Greyson Phillip; brother-in-law and wife, Roger and Mary Pittard and special friend, Lareen Anderson. Joe’s life was also abundantly blessed with many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and nephews and close friends. Celebration of Life services were held on July 31 at the United Methodist Church in Geneva with the Rev. Ron Harris officiating. Jan Schelkopf accompanied guitarist and vocalist Jim Pipher in “Will the Circle Be Unbroken,” “I’ll Fly Away,” “This Land is Your Land,” and “You are My Sunshine.” She also accompanied the congregation in singing “Amazing Grace.” Pallbearers for the service were Kent Pittard, Mark Pittard, Tim Fairbanks, Jeremy Fairbanks, Larry Bornschlegl and Jim Bornschlegl. Military graveside services were conducted by the Geneva American Legion Sloan-Bolton Post No. 68, and the Geneva VFW Samuel J. Marsh Post No. 7102 at the Geneva Public Cemetery.
