"For twenty-seven years, save for a period of eighteen months, Benjamin Eddins Isbell of De Queen has continuously practiced law in Sevier county and there are few men who have so intimate a knowledge of land law as he. His labors in this field have been particularly notable and thoroughly acceptable to his constituents, for he has perhaps assisted more people to secure and retain homes on the public domain than any other man who has held office in Sevier county. "Mr. Isbell's life story is an interesting one, indicating the force of character and the possibility of attainment through determined purpose, intelligently directed. He was born in Sumter county, Alabama, February 23, 1870, and was a lad of but eleven years when his parents removed with their family to Arkansas, settling in Sevier county on a farm near the town of Horatio. There he was reared to manhood and his education was received under the tutorship of his mother, who was a highly educated woman. He afterward enjoyed a short academic course, and also a business course. When twenty-one years of age he began teaching school and while thus engaged he devoted his leisure hours to the study of law. He was admitted to the bar, after which he located for practice in Sevier county and has been an honored representative of the profession here since, save for a period covering eighteen months spent in Oklahoma in 1905-06. "In the meantime, Mr. isbell had been called to public office, having first been elected tax assessor of Sevier county in 1894. He discharged the duties of the position carefully and judiciously and in 1898 was elected circuit and county clerk, the two offices then being united in one, the separation coming at the end of his first term, at which time Mr. Isbell was reelected circuit clerk without opposition and again was called to the office in 1902. He thus served three consecutive terms, retiring from the position in 1904 with the confidence and goodwill of all concerned. In that year he was elected, without opposition, to the state legislature and took his place as one of the lawmakers of the state, giving thoughtful and earnest consideration to all the vital questions that came up for settlement. When his legislative term had ended he removed to Idabel, Oklahoma, where for eighteen months he continued in law practice. He returned to Arkansas in the summer of 1908. During his incumbency in the clerk's office he assisted many settlers in filing on homesteads. Acquainted with the land laws of both the state and the United States he enjoyed the distinction of being one of the most competent land clerks of Arkansas and his labors have been of vital importance and worth in aiding his fellow citizens to secure and retain homes in Sevier county. He has also become well known in financial circles as president of the Bank of De Queen and as vice president of the Bank of Horatio. The practice of law, however, has been his real life work and he has gained distinction in this field. "On the 7th of May, 1902, Mr. Isbell was united in marriage to Miss Maude Floyd, who died in 1920. They became parents of three sons: Eugene, who died in infancy; Fletcher Floyd, now attending high school; and Francis, whose death occurred in 1912. "Mr. Isbell is a member of the Masonic fraternity and of the Presbyterian church. He has served as chairman of the democratic central committee and has been prominent politically. He regards the pursuits of private life as in themselves abundantly worthy of his best efforts and he is now directing his energies into fields where the fruition is gratifying and where the attainment of success is synonymous with the attainment of prominence."
