Description	:	Julia Mary Smith, daughter of Conrad and Ursula (Schoquet) Smith, was born Nov. 9, 1865 in Cook County, Illinois, and passed away Feb. 20, 1950, at Cherokee, Iowa at age 84 years, 3 months, 11 days. When she was eight years old, she and her parents moved to the Paton vicinity. She received her education in Paton. At one time she owned a millinery shop in Paton where she was very successful. When she was eight years old, she and her parents moved to the Paton vicinity. She received her education in Paton. At one time she owned a millinery shop in Paton where she was very successful. In young womanhood, she consecrated her life to the Lord. She became a member of Salem Evangelical Church, later transferring her membership to Paton Methodist Church. She was deeply interested in the work of God. She was married to Paulus Hocke on March 2, 1886 in Paton, Iowa. To this union, two sons were born, Emery and Herbert. She was preceded in death by her father and mother; husband; one son, Emery, who died in infancy; three brothers; and three sisters. Surviving are her son, Herbert, Herbert's wife of Richmond, California; three grandchildren; two great grandchildren; nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends. Her funeral was held Friday, Feb. 24 in Slininger Funeral Home, Jefferson. E. L. Marousek, D. D., pastor of the Presbyterian Church in Jefferson, officiated. Music was recordings of "Rock of Ages" and "In the Garden", by the Revelers and Marian Talley. Instrumental music, "He Leadeth Me" was played by Mark Andrews. Casket bearers were V. R. Smith, Art Smith, Harlan Smith, Albert Eilersen, C. A. Pemble and Harry Smith. Interment was made in Paton Township Cemetery; Greene County, Iowa. Since the 1990 U.S. Federal Census burned, there is no record of what happened in the marriage. At age 86, Julia died at Cherokee, Iowa, in the Cherokee State Hospital, a psychiatric facility. Perhaps Julia grappled with the loss of baby Emery and needed some support. In those days, people were institutionalized for depression rather than helped through counseling, and medications were not yet available. Julia and Paulus' son, Herbert, was born Jan. 17, 1890 in Webster County, IA. He was married to Ellen Isabelle Turner, and they had three children: Earnest, Mervin and Ida. Herbert died Jan. 9, 1968 in Contra Costa County, CA. His burial is not known as of this writing.
