Johnston, 64, of Ottumwa Route 2, died at the Ottumwa Hospital at 4:30 a.m. today. He had been ill about a month. He was born in Wayne County on March 1, 1898, the son of George W. and Amy E. Corder Johnston, and had resided in the Ottumwa area for 42 years. He had been an employ of John Morrell & Co. for 24 years and was a member of CIO Local No. 1. He was married May 14, 1931, in Lancaster, Mo., to Sarah Richmond, who survives. Besides his widow, he leaves three daughters, Mrs. Erma Richerodt of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Mrs. Rosalie Woodard and Mrs. Laura Lue Moore of Ottumwa; two stepsons, Alfred Richmond of Waterloo and Leo Richmond of Ottumwa; 16 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and four sisters, Mrs. Opha M. Gatts of Leon, Mrs. Dora E. Ellis of Ottumwa, Leah L. Johnston of Des Moines, and Mrs. Eula V. Cox of Ames. He was preceded in death by an infant son, one brother, one sister, and a stepson. The body is at the Johnson Funeral Chapel. “Johnston Funeral,” From “Ottumwa Courier,” March 10, 1962: The funeral for Laurel L. Johnston, 64, of Route 2, who died at 4:30 a.m. Friday at Ottumwa Hospital, will be Monday at 1:30 p.m., at the Johnson Funeral Chapel. Rev. Richard Easterday of the Alliance Church will be in charge. Nephews will serve as pallbearers. Burial will be in Shaul Cemetery.
