The drowning of Lawrence Pilcher, coach at the Eskridge high school, Sunday, August 20th was a stunning and cruel shock to this community where he grew to manhood, and to the communities where he had taught and lived. He and three companions, Mr. and Mrs. Leland Lucky and Hollis McCoy, all of Eskridge were riding in a sailboat at Lake Wabaunsee when the boat overturned. The three saved their lives by clinging to the boat until help arrived. Lawrence tried to swim ashore for help but undoubtedly was seized by cramps and his death resulted.
Mrs. Pilcher was visiting at the home of her parents at Luray at this time.
Lawrence was a likable, upstanding young man and all who knew him loved him as was shown by the huge numbers of his students and friends who came from Miltonvale, Simpson, Delphos, Asherville, Randall, Jewell City, Beloit and other towns to attend the last solemn rites of this life on Tuesday afternoon.
Lawrence B. Pilcher, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Pilcher was born August 22, 1908, on the old homestead, six miles north of Glasco and died at Eskridge, Kansas, August 20, 1939, at the age of 30 years, 11 months and 29 days. His sudden death came as a shock to his relatives and friends.
He attended grade and high school at Glasco, Kansas, graduating in 1927. He attended Kansas State College at Manhattan, majoring in physical education. He received his degree from there in 1933.
He was principal of the Glasco Grade School in 1934 and 1935. The next four years he taught and coached in the high schools of Cunningham, Asherville, and Randall. He had accepted a position as coach at Eskridge for the coming year and for the past two months had sponsored the Boy Scouts and summer recreational activities there.
Lawrence joined the Glasco Methodist church, November 23, 1919. He was united in marriage to Awayn Taylor, of Luray, Kansas, on May 31, 1937, at Salina, Kansas.
He leaves to mourn his death, his wife, his mother, Mrs. Adah Pilcher, two sisters, Mrs. Ed McClellan, and Mrs. Guy Hillan, and a host of relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his father, Charles, July 11, 1914, and brother, Clifford, January,4, 1928.
Funeral services were held at Eskridge, Kansas on Monday, July 21, and in the Glasco Methodist Church on Tuesday, both services being conducted by Rev. S.M. Finch of Eskridge. The pallbearers were Ed Bracken, Elmer Beck, Howard Courtney, Robert Pitner, Leland Chapin and Hosea Lavy. |
