Description	:	Luella Maxine Shattuck was born on May 8, 1921 to Guy W. and Anna (Heiden) Lewis in Norfolk, NE. She was brought home on a train at one week old to a farm located three miles south of Paxton, SD. Luella attended grade school at Sioux Valley School and then attended Dallas High School her freshman year. She went to stay with her sister Josephine and attended high school in Princeton, IL her sophomore year. She informed us that she would not recommend this to anyone as she was homesick all year. She returned to Gregory High School her junior... Read More	Luella Maxine Shattuck was born on May 8, 1921 to Guy W. and Anna (Heiden) Lewis in Norfolk, NE. She was brought home on a train at one week old to a farm located three miles south of Paxton, SD. Luella attended grade school at Sioux Valley School and then attended Dallas High School her freshman year. She went to stay with her sister Josephine and attended high school in Princeton, IL her sophomore year. She informed us that she would not recommend this to anyone as she was homesick all year. She returned to Gregory High School her junior and senior year and graduated in 1939. Luella married Lloyd Shattuck on March 6, 1940. To this union four children were born—Floyd, Kathleen, Mavis, and Darrell. The first seven years of marriage they lived with Lloyd's parents, Ernest and Grace Shattuck, on a farm south of Carlock. They purchased a farm adjoining which was very convenient for the grandkids to walk over the hill to visit. Luella had four siblings: Josephine Dall, Donald Lewis, Anna Mae Jamison, and Oma Marek. She enjoyed bowling, crocheting, dances at Carlock, sewing, baking, playing cards, and raising chickens to feed the family. Her fried chicken was the greatest. Lloyd died on September 21, 1987. Luella moved to Gregory in July 1988. Luella maintained her home in Gregory until January 29, 2014 when she spent six weeks at Silver Threads. She then moved to Rose Manor in Colome until she became ill on May 11, 2014 and entered the Gregory Hospital. On May 16, 2014 the family took her to her home in Gregory. Luella died peacefully on May 31, 2014 surrounded by her family. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Lloyd, a brother Donald, a sister Josephine, great grandsons Drake Shattuck and Jamison Burger, and son-in-law Larry Flakus. Luella is survived by son Floyd (Kay) Shattuck, Mitchell, SD, daughter Kathleen Flakus, Colome, SD, daughter Mavis (Bill) Beckers, Burke, SD, and son Darrell (Roxie) Shattuck, Gregory, SD; sisters Anna Mae Jamison, O'Neill, NE and Oma Marek, Gregory, SD; sister-in-law Esther Shattuck, twelve grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, 24 great-great grandchildren, one great-great-great grandchild, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Funeral services for Luella Shattuck were held Saturday, June 7, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Gregory, SD with Pastor Royal Archer officiating. A prayer service was held Friday evening at 7:00 p.m. at Kotrba-Smith Funeral Home in Gregory, SD. Music was provided by Bette Fogel, pianist and Geoff Smith, vocalist, "Amazing Grace My Chains Are Gone," "Going Home," and "One Day at a Time." Congregational songs were "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" and "How Great Thou Art." Flower attendants were Sally Shaffer, Janice Gruhn, and Carol Painter. Karen Hansen and Carol Beth Winter were in charge of registration. Casket Bearers were Steve Shattuck, Mike Shattuck, Damon Beckers, Willy Beckers, Tony Shattuck, Kelly Dougherty, Pat Dougherty, and Michael Dougherty. Honorary Casket Bearers were Jody Burger, Cheryl Dougherty, Tami Hotz, Billie Jo Indahl, Lori DeMers, Lisa Thieman, and Tiffany Dailey. Burial was in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Gregory, SD.
