Description	:	Mrs. A. B. Wood, 83, Gering pioneer and widow of the founder of the Gering Courier, passed away peacefully in her sleep early Sunday morning at the home here. She had been in failing health for a number of years. Funeral services were conducted from the Central Church of Christ, which Mrs Wood helped organize, in Gering Tuesday afternoon and burial was in West Lawn Cemetery. Maggie Claypool, the daughter of William E. and Sarah Claypool, was born Sept. 3, 1867, at Malta Bend, Mo. She moved from her Missouri birthplace with her parents to Cozad, Nebr., and from Cozad to Gering in 1887, when on advice from Martin Gering, she homesteaded west of Gering, living in a dugout near the site of the present Scotts Bluff Country Club building. She returned to Cozad to be married on Oct. 11, 1888, to Asa Butler Wood, pioneer Gering publisher. They made the home at Gering. Her schooling was at Malta Bend and Cozad, later teaching near Cozad. ==== Civic minded and with high Christian ideals, Mrs. Wood took an active part in several organizations. She was one of the organizers of the Church of Christ in Gering and a charter member. She took part in the activities of the Order of the Eastern Star and the Daughters of the American Revolution, and was a charter member of the Gering Woman's Club. Mr. (Asa Butler) Wood died in May of 1945 and three of the couple's children died in infancy. Two daughters, Bess Lucile and Marjorie Ellen, also preceded her in death. Surviving are three daughters and one son. The daughters are Mrs. Horton Colbert of Lexington, Mass., Mrs. Bryan Sands of Bremerton, Wash., and Mrs. James W. Ponder of Gering, wirh whom Mrs. Wood had made her home for several years at 1925 12th street. Warren C. Wood, publisher of the Gering Courier, is the surviving son. Mrs. Wood had no surviving brothers or sisters. Pallbearers were James W. Ponder Jr., Harold Gentry Jr., Emory Hubbard, Harvey Hawbaker, Dewey Reeder, all of Gering; and Don Sayre of Morrill. Mrs. Wood's daughter, Mrs. Sands of Bremerton, Wash., had been visiting at Gering until only a few days prior to her mother's death and did not attend the services. She homesteaded in Scotts Bluff county in 1888 and was a teacher prior to her marriage. She met Asa in St. Louis. She married Asa Butler Wood on November 11, 1888 in Cozad, Nebraska. They were married at the home General Asa Butler in Iowa. Maggie gave much to social, religious and civic service for the community of Gering. Children: Mrs. W.B. Sands (Marie), Mrs. Jas. W. Ponder (Dorothy) of Gering; Warren C. Wood of Gering; Mrs. Horton Colbert (Lynette) of California. She lost 2 daughters Bess and Marjorie both around the age of 20 years old.
