Williams, M.D. A letter form the War Department has been received by Mr. and Mrs. Harry Cooney, residing southeast of Brooks, brings a little more information about their son, ARM 1/c Manford Lyle Cooney, who was reported "missing at see in line of duty in the Pacific area." The first information came about February 1, but did not give the date when Manford was missing. The letter received last week states that Manford has been listed as missing since January 15, 1945. He was a radio operator on a plane operating from a carrier ship. The letter states that as his plane was catapulted from the carrier it crashed and burned. He had been in the Navy nearly three years and took part in many of the more important operations in the Pacific. He was home on furlough last August. A brother, Leonard Cooney, is with the American forces in Italy. Cooney of Nodaway, received a telegram from the War Department which verifies the death of their son, Manford Lyle Cooney, aviation radio man first class, U. S. Navy. Cooney was reported missing January 15, 1945 in the Pacific. Information recieved from unofficial sources on the details of the plane accident in which Cooney was involved did not hold much hope for his survivor, so the official announcement Monday was not unlooked for. The telegram read as follows: The Navy Department deeply regrets to inform you that a careful review of all facts available relating to the disappearance of your son. Manford Lyle Cooney, Aviation radio-man first class USNR previously reported missing leads to the conclusion that there is no hope for his survival and that he lost his life as a result of a plane crash on 15 January 1945, while in the service of his country, 1945 while tional information is received it will be forwarded to you promptly. Thirteen graves were decorated. One peony was planted on the church lawn in memory of Lyle Cooney, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Cooney, whose body was never recovered after his death.
