JANE SNYDER DIED AT MRS. MARY MARQUARDT HOME
Mrs. Jane Snyder passed away at the home of Mrs. Mary Marquardt, Friday afternoon at the age of 61 years. Mrs. Snyder has been a helpless invalid for many years, crippled with rheumatism, and unable to leave her bed, so the end has been expected.
Jane Ruthgen was born on December 12, 1865 and died on September 27, 1924. She was married to George Snyder in February, 1895, and lived practically all of her life in Osage. Three children were born to this union, Earl Snyder, Osage, Mary Van Fleet, Waterloo, and Millie who preceded her in death by a few years.
During the years she has suffered, Mrs. Snyder has been patient and kind, and appreciated the attentions of those who cared for her, and her last years have been pleasant and peaceful. Her time was spent in reading, with her Bible and Sunday school papers and literature her constant companions.
Funeral services were held from the home of her son, Earl, on Sunday afternoon, and interment made in the local cemetery. [ Mitchell County Press, October 1, 1924 ] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Maria Jane Rathjen was born December 12, 1865 at Osage, Iowa to Hartwig and Hannah Hodgson Rathjen. She was known to the family as Jane and had an older brother Nathan. Her mother, Hannah, died May 3, 1866 at Osage, Iowa. After her mother's death, Hartwig, her father, and Nathen, her brother, moved to a farm at Monticello Township, Johnson County, Kansas in the fall of 1866. Jane was a baby, less than a year old, and remained in Osage, Iowa under the care of her mother's childhood friend, Mrs. Mary Lloyd Reimers. Mrs. Reimers had also migrated to Osage, Iowa and had no children of her own. Her father and brother never saw Jane again.
