She married on January 25, 1885, in Wells County, to Perry E. Gilbert, son of Martin and Lydia Ann Houtz Gilbert. They were the parents of four children: Harry Homer, Lela Grace, Howard D. and Herman L. Gilbert. Obituary for Mary Ellen Valentine Gilbert from the Bluffton News Banner of Monday, March 13, 1950: "Mrs. Mary Gilbert Dies Sunday Night. Mrs. Mary Ellen Gilbert, 89, formerly of Uniondale, died at 11 o'clock Sunday night at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Dwight Lesh, in Rockcreek Township. She had been ill four days and death was attributed to infirmities of age. Mrs. Gilbert was born December 11, 1861, in Harrison Township, to John and Mary Decker Valentine. Her marriage to Perry E. Gilbert took place in Bluffton in January, 1884. His death occurred on April 9, 1919. She was a lifetime resident of Wells County and since her marriage had resided continuously in Rockcreek Township. She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and a charter member of the Women's Missionary Society of that church. Surviving are the daughter, Mrs. Dwight Lesh; three sons, Harry H. Gilbert and Howard D. Gilbert, both of Rockcreek Towship, and Rev. Herman L. Gilbert, of New York City; a sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Hoopingarner, of Los Angeles, California; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. A sister and brother are deceased. The body was removed to the Jahn Funeral Home and will be returned to the Lesh home where friends may call after 6 o'clock this evening. Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon at the St. Paul Lutheran Church, with Rev. H. L. Walmsley officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery."
