Later news received is that Mr. Speltz's death followed a stroke, he sustained, while on his way home from visiting a relative. The New Hamption Tribune gives the following account of his demise: The sudden death of Mr. Mathias Speltz, New Years evening was a great shock to the community, because though the deceased had been rather poorly of late, yet he had been about town and the neighborhood very frequently. Only New Years afternoon had he been visiting at the home of his wife's brother Nick Hentges. They started home about 4:30 p.m. and Mrs. Speltz went ahead to see to the fire at home. He followed but when he reached the crossroads in front of Rev. Forkenbrocks he was taken with a stroke of paralysis. He was taken into Rev. Forkenbrocks home and a little later taken on a cot to his own home a block north. At 9:15 that evening he died. The funeral will be held from St. Mary's Church in this city Thursday morning, January 4, 1923 with his pastor, Rev B.H. Forkenbrock officiating. The deceased, Mr. Mathias Speltz, was born August 5, 1856, at Holy Cross, Dubuque County, Iowa. On February 3, 1880, he was married in Dubuque County to Miss Catherine Hentges. They lived there for three years, and then moved to Hospers, Sioux County, Iowa, where the lived for eighteen years. Then they moved to a farm south of New Hampton, where the resided until ten years sgo when the moved ioto their home on South Walnut Street. Nine children were born to these excellent people. Three of them have preceded their father to the grave, Those living are Mrs. Justine Holschlag of New Hampton; Simon Speltz of Wisconsin Rapids, Wis., Miss Agatha Speltz of home, Everest Speltz, of Park Falls, Wis., George and Ben Speltz on farms near Rudolph, Wis. Besides his wife and family he leaves ten grandchildren and two sisters, Mrs. Nick Wagner, of Rolling Stone, Minn., and Mrs. Barney Heying, of Cyril, Okla. Dyersville Commercial, Jan. 11, 1923
