Read More	Daughter of Alexander Lovin "Alex" Robbins and Hattie Hasseltine Grant Robbins. Maude Helen Robbins was born on Silvermine which is in the Nantahala Twp. of Swain County, NC. Her family lived at the of what is now called Taylor Road and where Grant Estates are now. She attended school on Silvermine with Texie Jane Grant as her teacher; she was reported by Texie to have been a good student also. Texie taught all of the Robbins children in the building which is present day Silvermine Baptist Church. Texie told stories of cutting her hair and the other students' hair. She said Maude had ashe-blonde hair as a child; it changed to more brown as an adult. Growing up she lived on what is now called Taylor Road which branches off Silvermine Road near on up past Silvermine Baptist Church, at the old Grant homeplace there (the John Patton Grant place). She was the granddaughter of John Patton Grant and Georgeann Wofford Grant and of Andrew Wade "Wade" Robbins and Nancy Mathis Robbins. One of her enjoyments was writing songs; she wrote one entitled, "My Blue-Eyed Sweetheart;" Her husband, Earl, had blue eyes. She married Earl Jackson Hogue, the son of Riley William Hogue and Lottie Rose Dills Hogue, in Walhalla, SC. She and Earl lived in and raised their children in Nantahala, Swain, NC near the Macon County line. Sometimes birth records say "Macon County" as erroneously reported by the midwife; the family's home was indeed in Swain County. The road is in Macon County snd crosses over into Swain County before it reaches their land. They had 12 children, 8 boys and 4 girls. Maude was sometimes called Maudie for a "pet name." She loved to sing also but most important, she loved the Lord Jesus; she was a stong Christian lady and brought her children up teaching them about her Saviour. Oldest son said she loved church and faithfully took her children to church at Fairview Baptist Church (Happy Top) every Sunday and every holiday. She loved to sing and was very good; she sang solos in church, including songs she wrote. She had long wavy light brown or dark blonde (dark ashe blonde) hair. Her children have a favorite memory that she loved to sing. Another is of her cooking.. She would make chocolate gravy as a treat for them. They said when she made hot dogs, she would make a huge bowl of cole slaw to go with it. They loved pinto beans and she would buy a 100 lb bag of beans for $7. She did a lot of canning and they had a cellar where they stored potatoes and apples; they had many apple trees. The family had chickens and a garden as most families then did. Her children said she was a great cook and they loved when she made a big old pot of pintos with cornbread to go with it; they ate many homegrown foods also. She loved her family and worked hard taking care of them. Money was tight and it went to paying for food mostly. Oldest son remembers they didn't do anything special for Christmas or birthdays except sometimes his Mother would make a fruit cake for Christmas and he doesn't remember any birthday cakes but rarely. All of his life for Christmas he remembers he got one toy, a red wagon and his brothers he remembered got tricycles. They didn't get a treat bag at church and never had oranges but he said they had all the apples they could get as they had many trees. His mother knew how to grow fruit and had blackberries canned and made into jelly also. He said she was a fine Christian woman who loved the Lord and her family, took care of her kids, garden, canning and kept them fed. She raised them right. One day family who know the Lord Jesus will be together again in Heaven and a lot because of her Godly influence, she taught them about Jesus and took them to church at Happy Top. Note: Death certificate says wrong cause of death. She was having surgery to repair a goiter. The nurse came out and let them know them know doctor accidentally cut vein. Mountain Links
