Description	:	Orvil F. Heitmann, the son of Fred and Louise (Hellmer) Heitmann, was born on August 13, 1921, on a farm east of Byron, Nebraska. He was the eldest of four children born to his parents. He passed away on May 14, 2009, at Parkview Haven Nursing Home, in Deshler, Nebraska, at the age of 87 years, 9 months and 1 day. Orvil attended the... Read More	Orvil F. Heitmann, the son of Fred and Louise (Hellmer) Heitmann, was born on August 13, 1921, on a farm east of Byron, Nebraska. He was the eldest of four children born to his parents. He passed away on May 14, 2009, at Parkview Haven Nursing Home, in Deshler, Nebraska, at the age of 87 years, 9 months and 1 day. He was baptized on August 28, 1921 at St. John Lutheran Church rural Byron, Nebraska, by Pastor Lentz and confirmed on July 14, 1935 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Byron, Nebraska by Pastor Schardt. Orvil attended the Crackerbox country school near his farm through the eighth grade then he was needed to work on the farm. Through his 60+ years of farming he saw all the modern improvements that made farming more efficient and productive. Orvil started farming with horses including the ones that got spooked while harvesting and broke his leg that kept him out of World War II. Orvil loved farming and raising cattle. From his start with horses, his legacy now includes 2 sons and 2 grandsons to farm what he started. He was united in marriage to Elda Holtzen on April 29, 1945, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church , Kiowa, Nebraska by Pastor Frese. This union was blessed with five children, Carol, Dennis, Doyle, Marlyn and Randy. Orvil remained active in farming until his health declined. Then he enjoyed driving the roads, watching and checking up on what was going on or taking a ride in the tractor or combine. Later he became a resident of Parkview Haven Nursing Home and Meadowlark Heights Assisted Living in Deshler. After retiring from farming, Orvil enjoyed coffee with friends in the morning and playing cards in the afternoons with his "Orvil" drink. He also enjoyed watching sporting events on TV. Together Orvil and Elda enjoyed traveling and attending Nebraska Husker football games. Orvil enjoyed watching his grandchildren participate in sporting events and watching them grow up. His face would always light up when his grandchildren or great-grandchildren came to visit. Orvil has been an active member of the Byron Lions Club and also served as a state officer for many years. Orvil and Elda enjoyed traveling to New Orleans, British Columbia, St. Louis, Hawaii and other cities for Lions Club events. They found many friends around the country during their travels. Orvil was an active member of the Byron School Board, the rural Fire District for 25 years, Byron Elevator Board, Thayer County Hospital Board, President of the Thayer County Hospital Foundation, St. John Lutheran Church of Chester serving in many offices and the Lutheran Laymen's League. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife, Elda on August 5, 1990. He is survived by his children: Carol Swan and husband, Robert of Lincoln, NE; Dennis Heitmann and wife, Kim of Lincoln, NE; Doyle Heitmann and wife, Linda of Chester, NE; Marlyn Heitmann and wife Chris of Byron, NE; and Randy Heitmann and wife, Kathy of Cambridge, NE; 13 grandchildren: Darren Heitmann, Jeremy (Libby) Heitmann, Suzanne (Tracy) Duncan, Amber (Toby) Webb, Corey (Megan) Heitmann, Ryan Regelean, Brant Heitmann, Krysta Regelean, Paige Turan, Blake Heitmann, Ali Turan, Sheila Heitmann and Hayden Loontjer; 7 great-grandchildren: Makennah Heitmann, Will Heitmann, Teegan Duncan, Halsey Heitmann, Jordan Duncan, Maverick Webb and Macy Heitmann; sisters, Leora Kniep and husband, Wilber and Ruby Eggers and husband, Max all of Byron, NE, and Alice Eggers of Ruskin, NE; and many other relatives and friends. Funeral Services: Monday, May 18, 2009, at 10:30 AM at St. John Lutheran Church, Chester, Nebraska.
