Description	:	OBITUARY: Orvin Wesley Oestmann, one of five children of Herman and Emma (Torbeck) Oestmann, was born Jan. 27, 1927 near Auburn, NE. Orvin was baptized Feb. 13, 1927, and confirmed April 5, 1942, both at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Johnson, NE. He attended Rohrs Country School, and graduated from Auburn HIgh School in 1944. Read More	OBITUARY: Orvin Wesley Oestmann, one of five children of Herman and Emma (Torbeck) Oestmann, was born Jan. 27, 1927 near Auburn, NE. Orvin was baptized Feb. 13, 1927, and confirmed April 5, 1942, both at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Johnson, NE. He attended Rohrs Country School, and graduated from Auburn HIgh School in 1944. Orvin served two years in the United States Army, leaving for service Jan. 1 7, 1951 during the Korean Conflict. He was shipped to Japan in Sept. and from there to Inchon, KOrea to join Company A. 7th Cavalry regiment at the battlefront. Orvin was wounded in battle on Oct. 11, 1951. He spent two months in hospitals in Japan, and was awarded the Purple Heart. After his release from the hospital, Orvin spent about a year at differant bases in Japan before returning to the States with his honorable discharge on Jan. 12, 1 953. Upon returning to civilian life, Orvin resumed farming between Auburn and Johnson. HE moved from the farm into Johnson in 1966, and then to Auburn in 1985, where he would remain the rest of his life. As a lifetime member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Orvin was always involved in the music of the church, including singing in the choir and for occasions such as weddings and funerals. often with his brother Harold. Music was always a big part of Orvin's life. and some recordings of him singing solo and with others are still in the family. Orvin was also a member of the Auburn American Legion Post #23, and had served as Chaplain for the Post. No longer able to live by himself, Orvin entered the Goos Samaritan Society-Auburn in June of 2003, where he continued to entertain others with his voice. HE passed away there on Tuesday, May 25, 2010 at the age of 83 years, three months, and 28 days. His parents and sisters Verna Moody, Ernestine Lunzmann, and Eileen Coulter preceded him in death. Orvin is survived by his brother, Harold Oestmann of Auburn, many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. Funeral services were held Friday, May 28, 2010 at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Johnson, officiated by Pastor Catherine Burroughs. Susie Hogrefe played accompaniment for soloist Janell Johnson as well as for congregational hymns. Matt Oestmann, Allan Oestmann, Allan Moody, Larry Moody, Harvey LUnzmann, and Leland Lockard served as pallbearers. Buriel followed in the St. Matthew Lutheran Cemetery at Johnson with graveside military honors provided by American Legion Post #23 and VFW Post #2635 of Auburn, and the Nebraska National Guard Militay Honors Squad. Services were entrusted to Hemmingsen Funeral Home of Auburn, NE.
