Description	:	Chief Warrant Officer 4 (retired) Richard P. (Dick) Connell passed away on Monday, July 14, 2014 at St. Joseph's Hospital. Connell was born on February 7, 1925 to Patrick H. Connell and Ellen Helene Brown Connell and attended Saint Patrick's Elementary School and South High School, both in Omaha. Drafted into the Army in 1943 for World War II, he was a D-Day veteran who landed on Omaha Beach and saw action across France to include the Battle of the Bulge. Drafted into the Army in 1943 for World War II, he was a D-Day veteran who landed on Omaha Beach and saw action across France to include the Battle of the Bulge. He transitioned into the reserves at the end of the war, completing almost 44 years of distinguished military service. Dick worked at the Union Pacific Railroad his entire adult life until his retirement, and was a life-long member of St. Patrick's Church in Omaha until its closure last month. He was united in marriage to Margaret Goeser on May 2, 1953. Together they had six children, 11 grandchildren, and one great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents and one of his sons, Robert, who passed away in 1968. Survivors include his wife, Marge; brother, Joseph; children and their spouses: Patrick and Mary (Kunes) Connell, Charles and Pamela Connell Hunt, John and Terri (Perrone) Connell, Glen and Mary Connell Langenfeld, and Richard and Tiz (Roth) Connell; all of his grandchildren and great-grandchild. The family will receive friends Thursday, 5pm to 7pm with VIGIL SERVICE at 7pm, all at the West Center Chapel. Richard P. "Dick" Connell, 89, of Omaha died Monday. He grew up in Omaha, attending South High School — and was an "S-O-B," Connell would say, or "South Omaha Boy," said his son John Connell. After graduation, Connell was drafted into the Army in 1943. The D-Day veteran landed on Omaha Beach and later fought in the Battle of the Bulge. "He was proud of his service, but he wasn't boastful," John Connell said. "He had a strong sense of satisfaction in having done his duty." When he returned home, he transitioned into the reserves and retired with the rank of chief warrant officer 4. He married Margaret Goeser in 1953, and the couple had six children. One son, Robert, died in 1968. "He was a slave to his family," John Connell said. Connell worked full time at Union Pacific Railroad until his retirement and spent weekends with the Army reserves. He had one ironclad rule, his son said: His children would graduate from college. His children finished college without student loan debt, thanks to their father's scraping and saving money, John Connell said. The soft-spoken man with a sense of humor was a lifelong member of St. Patrick's Church until it closed last month. He was an avid fisherman and hunter, and he took the family on camping trips to the Rockies and Sand Hills. He was skilled at plumbing, carpentry, electrical work and masonry, John Connell said, and he was an amateur radio operator. Richard Connell was "exceptionally proud" of people who served their country, said John Connell, who is a retired Army colonel. Two of Connell's sons and one daughter served in the military, as did four of his grandchildren. "He didn't set the example for what a good person should be. He was the good example," John Connell said. Other survivors include his wife, Margaret; two sons, Patrick and Richard; two daughters, Pamela Hunt and Mary Langenfeld; a brother, Joseph; 11 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Services were held Friday at St. Bridget Catholic Church.
