Sally/Sarah E. Carroll was the first wife of James Smith [Sr.]. ---------------------------------- Note: PLEASE, do NOT transfer this memorial to other web sites. Thanks, Nancy (Letcher) Heib. ---------------------------------- Note: In those days, Sally was a nickname for Sarah. (The names "Sarah" and "Sally" were interchangeable, in that time period). -------------------------------------- She is listed as "Sally" on her headstone , but she was listed as "Sarah" in the obituary for her husband James Smith Sr., and in a letter written by her daughter Nancy. ----------------------------------- In a letter her youngest daughter Nancy wrote to Nancy's Great-Granddaughter Thelma Bliss, Nancy states that her mother's maiden name was "Sarah" E. Carroll. ---------------------------------- Note: James's obituary states that they came to Michigan in 1848(?). It also (incorrectly) states that Sarah died on Jan. 28, 1849. (One of the children no doubt gave the information for his obituary, but they were all little children when their mother died). ----------------------------------- Sally/Sarah E. Carroll was "possibly" born in Delaware County, New York. ----------------------------------- Sally/Sarah E. Carroll was married to James Smith [Sr.] on Feb. 16, 1837 in New York State [per his obituary], (possibly in Delaware County). ----------------------------------- Note: The family of her husband James Smith Sr., was from the town of Cannonsville (near Deposit and Tompkins), in Delaware County New York. --------------------------------- Sally/Sarah's "Carroll" family was "possibly" from the town of Trout Creek (also known as Tompkins), near Deposit and Cannonsville, in Delaware County New York. Note: There is a "Carroll Cemetery" in Trout Creek (Tompkins), Delaware County New York. (There is a Henry Lafayette Carroll buried there, who could "possibly" be her brother (?). --------------------------------- Sally/Sarah and her husband James Smith Sr. had six children (per the 1850 census of Berrien County Michigan, and the obituary for her husband James Smith Sr.) They are: Huldah, James Milton Jr., Mary Ellen, Howard Francis, Nancy A., and "Infant" Smith. -----------------------------------
1. Huldah I Smith. Born Dec. 26, 1838, in Delaware County New York. Huldah married Simeon Hamilton on July 2, 1854, in Berrien County Michigan. They had four children: Ida, John, Alanson, and Bertie Hamilton. Huldah died (as a widow), of uraemia, on Jan. 9, 1918, in Galien, Berrien County Michigan, at the age of 79 years, and 14 days. Huldah and Simeon Hamilton are also buried here in the Bakertown Cemetery. ------------------------------------- 2. James Milton Smith Jr. Born about 1840. He died in the Civil War, on May 22, 1862, aged 22 years. James Milton Smith [Jr.] served as a Sergeant, in the 6th Michigan Infantry, Company A. He died of congestive fever, on board the Mississippi Steamer named the "Laurel Hill", on the Mississippi River. (His burial site is unknown). ------------------------------------ 3. Mary Ellen Smith. Born (about June 23), 1843. She was married (to a widower), Ezekiel James Borden, in Bertrand Township, Berrien County Michigan, on Feb. 5, 1865, by Hiram Baker, Justice of the Peace (the same minister who married sister Nancy and DeBert Bliss one month later). He was sometimes listed as "James E. Borden". [He is "possibly" the son of Isaac Borden and his wife Elizabeth McClean]. Mary Ellen died on April 7, 1894, at the age of 52 (per the obituary for her father James). Ezekiel James (a carpenter and farmer), and Mary Ellen Borden lived in New Troy [West of Buchanan], Weesaw Township, Berrien County Michigan in 1870 and 1880. The children of Ezekiel James and his first wife Jane [Bixby?] were: Charles, Franklin, Alice, and Harriet (or Hannah), and Olive Borden. Ezekiel James Borden and Mary Ellen had a son named James Howard Borden (born in Berrien County Michigan in 1866, married in Douglas County Kansas, and he died in Oklahoma). Mary Ellen Borden (1843-1894), is buried in the Oak Hill Cemetery, in Lawrence, Douglas County Kansas, in Section 7, Grave # 156. Oak Hill Cemetery office states that she was "buried" on April 7, 1894, which is incorrect, as Mary Ellen died on April 7. (Note: Two of Mary Ellen's step-sons Charles M. and Frank C. Borden, moved to Wichita, Sedgwick County Kansas, and are buried there). Mary's son James Howard Borden later moved from Kansas, to Webster township, in Woodward County Oklahoma. ------------------------------------- 4. Howard Francis Smith. [Recorded as Francis Howard Smith in the grardianship papers, but as Howard Francis Smith in all other records]. Born Feb. 14, 1844. (Note: His death certificate states that he was born Feb. 14, 1842). He served in the Civil War in the 12th Michigan Infantry, Company C., as a Sergeant. (The same unit his father and his step-brother served in). m. # 1. Mary Elizabeth Alvord (nicknamed "Libbie"), on June 4, 1871. Libbie died on Nov. 21, 1874. Libbie is also buried in this Bakertown Cemetery. m. # 2. Mary A. Goseline, on April 25, 1882. d. Howard died on July 9, 1921. Howard is buried with his second wife Mary, in the Oak Ridge Cemetery, in Buchanan, Berrien County Michigan, in Section A., lot # 93. Howard's children are: Harry S. Smith, Caroline "Carrie" Smith, and Cora Smith. ---------------------------------- 5. Nancy A. Smith. Born July 5, 1846, in Binghamton, Broome County New York. m. # 1. DeBert Bliss, in Bertrand Township, Berrien County Michigan, by Hiram Baker, Justice of the Peace (the same man who preformed the marriage ceremony for Nancy's sister Mary Ellen, one month earlier). After her husband DeBert Bliss died, Nancy moved to Las Vegas, San Miguel County New Mexico with her daughter Anna (in late 1900). Nancy was married there two more times. Nancy and DeBert's children are: Anna G. (Bliss) Geyer, and Milton James Bliss. Nancy died on May 12, 1939 at the home of her daughter in Springer, Colfax County New Mexico. Nancy is buried (next to her daughter and son-in-law), in the Fairmont Cemetery, in Raton, Colfax County New Mexico, ----------------------------------- 6. "Infant" Smith (per James's obit). _________________________________
Note: Could Sally/Sarah have died in the childbirth of this infant? (Her children were all born two years apart). ------------------------------------- Note: Their eldest child Huldah Smith, was born in Delaware County New York (per her death certificate), and their youngest child Nancy A. Smith was born (about 30 miles away), in Binghamton, Broome County New York (per her death certificate and her obituary). ---------------------------------- Sally (Sarah) died near Buchanan, Berrien County Michigan on Jan. 25, 1848, age 28 [per recordings of the Bakertown Cemetery, and her headstone]. (The obituary for her husband James Smith Sr. incorrectly states that she died on Jan. 28, 1849). ------------------------------------ Sally/Sarah and her husband James Smith Sr. had moved with their children, from Binghamton, Broome County, New York, to Buchanan, Berrien County Michigan in 1848 [per James's obituary], but Berrien County deed records show that James Smith Sr. purchased land from his brother (possibly part of his brother Caleb Smith Jr.'s farm on Chamberland Road) on August 2, 1847. Note: Sarah died near Buchanan, MI on Jan. 25, 1848. -------------------------------------- When Sally/Sarah died, she left behind, her husband James Smith Sr., and five children, ages 1 and 1/2 years, to 10 years old. (Her youngest child Nancy, was just 1 year, 6 months, and 20 days old, when Sally died). ------------------------------------- Sally's (Sarah's) headstone, which is located in the Bakertown Cemetery, on the S.-W. side of Buchanan, MI., (on the Northern edge of Bertrand Township), reads as follows: ----- SALLY E. WIFE OF JAMES SMITH. DIED Jan. 25, 1848, Aged 28 yrs. ------------------------------------- Note: There is what appears to be a bible verse at the very bottom of her headstone, but very difficult to read. ------------------------------------ Her headstone is located between her husband James Smith Sr.'s Civil War marker (which is on her right), and Caleb Smith Jr.'s headstone, which is on her left (the brother of her husband James Sr.). ----------------------------------- Note: In 1861, her 3 youngest children were appointed guardians, because they had inherrited land in Buchanan Township, Berrien Co. Michigan, from their Uncle Caleb Smith Jr. deceased (the older brother of James Sr.) ----------------------------------- Note: This memorial was researched and written, by Nancy (Letcher) Heib. ---- Sarah/Sally E. (Carrol) Smith, is my Gt., Gt., Great, Grandmother. Nancy (Letcher) Heib. ------------------------------------ Note: The next paragraph, is from the "Scalfaro-Watts Database", of Wendy Scalfaro, on Roots Web: "The Carroll family once owned a saw/grist mill on the property and the surrounding area of the Carroll Cemetery, in Trout Creek, Delaware County New York. The water may have come from a nearby waterfall that the Carroll family built in Trout Creek. The waterfall was named "Carroll's Falls". ----- There was also a mountain called "Carroll Hill" (that has since, possibly been renamed "Snyder Swamp"). _____________________________________
Note: The following is still being researched: ---------------- Note: Sally/Sarah is possibly the daughter of Jonathan (or "John") Carroll, of New York State (per: A letter from Sally's youngest child Nancy (Smith-Bliss) Studebaker, to Nancy's Great, Granddaughter Thelma Bliss). This leter also stated that Nancy's mother Sarah E. (Carroll) Smith, was related to (possibly a grand niece of) "Charles Carroll of Carrollton", who had signed the Declaration of Independence. Records still being searched. ------------------------------------- Could Sally/Sarah "possibly" be the daughter of John Alexander Carroll, born 1775 in Ireland, and died 1837 in Delaware County New York, and his wife Mary Ann Linden, born 1777, also in Ireland? (John Alexander Carroll built a family cabin on Cross Mountain, on Alder Lake, in Millbrook township, in Andes, Delaware County New York, and he also died there). Or could she be the daughter of John and Catherine Carroll??? ------------------------------- Note: "Possible" siblings of Sally/Sarah "could" be: ---------- 1. Walter T. Carroll. b. March 26, 1814. d. May 31, 1870, in Trout Creek, Delaware County New York. Buried: Carroll Cemetery, in Trout Creek (also called Tompkins), Delaware County New York. ---------------------------- 2. Henry Lafayette Carroll. b. 1825. d. 1865, in Trout Creek (Tompkins), Delaware County New York. Buried: Carroll Cemetery. (There is also another headstone for him in the Smith Cemetery, in Trout Creek (Tompkins), Delaware County New York). Land records in Delaware County New York show that a Jonathan Carroll sold land to a Henry Carroll (possibly father and son?). --------------------------- 3. Stephen Carroll (Jan. 17, 1831 - Oct. 18, 1895), the son of Jonathan Carroll (parents also listed as John and Catherine Carroll). Born 1831 in Albany, New York. Later of Delaware County New York. 1880 census: Tompkins, Delaware Co. N.Y. Died in 1895. (The "History of Delaware County New York" states "in part": Stephen Carroll, son of Jonathan Carroll, was born January 17, 1831 at Albany, and came to Delaware County in 1872). ---------------------------- 4. Polly Carroll, of Tompkins, Delaware County New York, married Simeon Goodman Jr. in 1830. ---------------------------- 5. Polly Carroll of Tompkins, Delaware County New York, married to Lewis Raymond Jr., of Sidney, on Nov. 12th, at Tompkins. (Published on Nov. 17, 1830). ---------------------------- 6. Patrick Carroll, born about 1810, in family cabin on Cross Mountain, in Andes, Delaware County New York. ---------------------------- 7. John Carroll, born 1818. Living in Delaware County New York in the 1850 and 1860 census. ___________________________________
