For several weeks, Mrs. George Shaw in her home in Hastings had borne patiently the physical pains incident to the malady that baffled the skill of physician and nurse. Mrs. Shaw was one of those women who found in her home sufficient to occupy her time and labor. Beautiful was the devotion of children and grandchildren to this noble woman. rich in the heritage of love and devotion by husband, children, and grandchildren and in high regard of her neighbors her life held blessed memories of work well done. The following annals are but a meager resume of her life; Sarah Augusta McGee was born January the second, 1853 at Clearfield, Pennsylvania and died at her home in Hastings, Iowa, June the twelfth, 1922, aged 69 years, 5 months, 10 days. When she was about seventeen years old she came with her parents to Iowa and lived for two years at Oakland. She then moved to Council Bluffs, where she lived at the time of her marriage in 1873 to George Shaw. Mr. and Mrs. Shaw after their marriage settled on a farm southeast of Hastings, where they continued to live for over thirty years, or until spring of 1906, when they moved to their present home in Hastings. Into this prosperous farm home, nine children were born, Frank E. and Mrs. W. C. Nimms of Red Oak, Fred D., of Elliott, Chas W. and Mrs. Stewart Honeyman of Emerson, Ben W. of Malvern, Mrs. C. H. McLain and Alfred P. of Hastings, and Olive L. who passed away July 12, 1916. By precept and example these children were taught the fundamentals of success. With motherly love, this Christian woman sought to impress upon the lives of her children the true value of character. If love is a heavenly virtue, and it must be for God is Love, then this mother exemplified a heavenly virtue in her love for her children. She worried over their failures and glorified in the successes, and when they left home, one by one, to establish homes of their own, she looked forward with joy to their periods of visitation, whether for an hour, a day, or a month. The grandchildren were always welcomed in the home with a real grandmotherly love and it was a delight for them to be there. One granddaughter, Miss Wilma G. Shaw, has made her home with her grandparents since she was about two years old. To her this death will be felt very keenly, as it was as the loss of a mother. Sister Shaw is survived by her husband, the forenamed children and grandchildren, four brothers, T. C. McGee of Wayland, Iowa, J. F. McGee of Seattle, Washington, G. W. McGee of Kansas, D. H. McGee of Idaho Falls, Idaho, and one sister, Mrs. J. E. Gorgan of Gateway, Oregon, together with numerous other relatives and scores of friends who today mourn her departure as one greatly beloved. When a girl of fourteen years, she was converted and joined the Methodist Episcopal Church and she remained a faithful member of that church unto her death. As long as health and home duets would permit, she was active in the work of the church, but for a number of years, she has been afflicted with failing health and the care of an aged mother, who died only a few years ago, so that she has not been privileged to enjoy the services of the church as she wanted to. About eight months ago she underwent an operation in hopes of benefiting her general health and for a time she seemed to be gaining, but other complications set in and she has suffered greatly for the past two months. She was a patient suffers but as the end drew near she longed for release from the bodily pain. She was ready and willing to go when the call came. She resteth now. No more her breast, Heaves with its wearily breath; Pain sits no longer on the brow Where lies the calm of death. Sound to her rest like a tired child, She lies in slumber deep, Soft folded in the arms of Him Who giveth His beloved Sleep. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon, conducted by her pastor, Rev. E. A. Smith. The assembly of neighbors and friends spoke eloquently of the high regard in which the deceased held.
