Winter, was born April 8th, 1895 in Page County, Iowa. He received most of his public school education in the country school, entering Villisca High Schoo in 1909, graduating at the age of 18. After two years he entered Lombard College at Galesburg, Illinois, but after completing one year he answered the call for his country and went to the Mexican border June 1916, with the National Guard, in which service he had began since May 12, 1912 and spent eight months in that service. After the declaration of war, he volunteered with his company, entering into service July 15, 1917, and leaving Villisca August 17th for his journey to France where he landed about December 13. When he left he was sergeant but was promoted to 1st sergeant the last of March. He was deprived of going to Officers’ training school on account of sickness confining him to the hospital. During nearly two years between high school and college he was employed in the Jones Hardware Store, filling the position so capably that it was waiting for him on his return from college, also on his return from the Mexican border, and it has been waiting for his return from Frances. He united with the Villisca N. E. Church at the age of 10 years. His membership was transferred for five years to Neal, then to Villisca where he has since held his membership. His death occurred in France on July 29, from wounds received in action. He leaves to mourn their loss his parents, three sisters, Georgia, Lucille, and Lenore; two aged grandmothers, Mrs. L. J. Brownlee and Mrs. Amelia Winter, and a host of relatives and friends.
