Mrs. Sophis Simmons, wife of Chas. Simmons, died at her home on the east edge of Colo at eleven o'clock this (Friday) morning. Her funeral will be conducted from the Evangelical church Sunday afternoon. Mrs. Simmons, who was formerly Mrs. Gressley, was 81 years of age last October, and she had been a member of this community for all of forty years. She leaves her husband, one son and three daughters, who were children of her earlier marriage, and numerous grandchildren. From Nevada Representative October 24, 1914 On the page captioned: COLO REPRESENTATIVE Obituary of Mrs. Simmons Mrs. Sophis Corfman Simmons was born in Taylor county, Ohio Oct. 10, 1832. She was married to John Charles Gressley in Wyondell county, Ohio, June 15, 1854. Nine children were born to them, one son and eight daughters. Five of the daughters preceded her to the world beyond. She together with her husband and children, came to Iowa the spring of 1867 and settled on the farm just east of Colo where she has since resided. In Nov. 1898 she married Charley Simmons. She departed this life Feb. 20, 1914, aged 81 years, 4 months and 10 days. She leaves to mourn her loss her husband, one son, Isaac Gressley of Williams, Iowa and three daughters, Mrs. Clara Heinecker of Marshalltown, Mrs. Ada Taylor of Lake City and Mrs. Ida Bagley of Des Moines, 15 grandchildren and 17 great grand children, three brothers and one sister besides many other relatives and friends. She was converted when eleven years of age and united with the Evangelical church in Colo. Upon coming to Colo she and her husband became charter members of the Evangelical church here. She was a kind and affectionate mother and her children will always cherish many loving tender memories of her. Funeral services were held in the U. E. church at 2:30 Sunday afternoon conducted by Rev. S. Skogsberg of Russell assisted by Rev. J. E. Habliston. Interment was made in the Colo cemetery. All of her children and nearly all of her grandchildren were present at the funeral and had been with her in her last hours of this life. Heartfelt sympathy extended to the bereaved ones.
