Delaney, 51 years old, living at 703 Twenty first street, received a quantity of burning oil over her body and died Sunday morning. The accident was due to the abuse of the time-honored rule to refrain from hastening fires with kerosene oil. About three weeks ago Mrs. Delaney, wife of J.C. Delaney, a hotel man of Carroll, Iowa, came to Denver and engaged quarters at the above number. Early last Saturday morning she arose and visited the kitchen intending to build a fire in the stove. After placing a quantity of coal and wood in the fire box, she brought out a gallon can of kerosene oil and began pouring part of its contents on the fuel. An instant later there was a loud explosion caused by a few sparks hidden in the ashes. The bottom of the can was blown out and the stove shattered. The burning oil struck the woman in the face, breast, hands and arms and set fire to her clothing. Frantically screaming, Mrs. Delaney rushed across the room and fell in a heap on the threshold leading to the entry. A room off from the kitchen is occupied by Mrs. A.L. McDonald. She was aroused by the report and dashed into the kitchen. A glance showed her the true status of affairs, and she seized a quantity of bed clothing and wrapped it about the burning form. In the meantime, Ed Shumate of Hannibal, Mo., who is occupying quarters near the kitchen, was also awakened by the explosion and darted to the side of the unconscious victim. Seeing that the fire in her clothing had been smothered, he directed his attention to the carpet. The oil had spread in every direction and the floor was burning fiercely. A couple of blankets soon quenched the flames. Dr. C.E. Tennant and his father, the former an expert on burns, were summoned and did all in their power to alleviate the woman's misery. Her face and breast were terribly cooked and no diagnosis was necessary to show her condition to be critical. Two more physicians were called, but the four medicos could not prevent the rapid sinking of the unfortunate, and Sunday morning she died. Mrs. Delany was a sufferer from Bright's disease, as well as her daughter, Mrs, F.J. Donahoe of Idaho Springs, and the shock attendant upon her frightful experience sufficed to place her out of agony. Undertaker McGovern was called and assumed charge of the remains, but failed, however, to notify the coroner of the unnatural death. An ignorance of the law also prevented those at the scene of death from consulting that official. The coroner would probably never would have heard of the case had it not been for the visit of Mr. McGovern himself. The undertaker failed to secure an emergency death certificate from the health office yesterday and then requested such paper from Coroner Holms. The latter was amazed when told of the death, and at once visited police headquarters for information. None was given, as no one had heurd of the demise. The body was shipped to Carroll, Iowa, last evening.
