DAVID NEFF Mrs. David Neff, the widowed mother of Mr. John Neff, died on Friday, the 6th Inst., at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. Boggs, of Findley Tp. She was upwards of eighty years of age and was visiting her daughter for a few days when she had the misfortune to fall and break two ribs. The severity of her injuries, taken in connection with her advanced age, was such that she lived only a few days and departed for the other shore, as above stated, on Friday last. Died, June 5th, near Woodburn, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. L. M. Boggs, with whom she was visiting, Mrs. Susan Neff, aged 82 years and 11 months. Mother Neff was well known to many of the early settlers of Osceola, having lived here with her husband to a ripe old age, when they broke up house-keeping and found a home with their son, Mr. John Neff, where they resided till some three years since the husband was called to cross the mystic river, since which time his aged companion has patiently waited the summons to join him on the other shore. Her chief delight was the study of the holy Bible. Her general health was good for one of her age till her last illness, which, though short, was very severe, but she endured it with patience and true Christian courage retaining her mental powers to the last, and passed away calmly as the setting of a summer sun, leaving many relatives and friends to mourn; but, not as those who have no hope, we fold the pale hands over the pulseless breast, "her life work done, her trials o'er," and lay the loved form to rest beside the companion of her youth, believing that she has heard the welcome plaudit: "Well done, thou good and faithful servant, enter thou into the joy of thy Lord." A marriage record from Washington County, Maryland shows a David Neff married Susan Wateman on Sept. 2, 1824. FEDERAL CENSUS DATA: In 1850 David and Susan were living in Henry County, Iowa with children: Joseph age 16, Susan age 14, and Lydia age 7. His birthplace is Maryland and Susan's is given as Pennsylvania. Their children were born in Ohio. In 1860, I find Susan and David in Osceola, Clarke Co., Iowa living with Ansuletta Wright, age 9 (grandchild?). They are in Osceola in 1880 living with their son, John, and his wife, Elizabeth, and their three sons: Alvin, Harvey and Frank. David's age is 80 and Susan ("Margaret") is 78.
