(Shepherd) Guess was born December 26, 1861, and died after a brief illness at her home in Lee Township on November 10, 1922. Funeral services were conducted from the home on Sunday at 1 p.m., Rev. Cummings, pastor of the Christian Church at Bergholz, officiating, assisted by Rev. Henry of Akron. Interment was made in Harlem Springs Cemetery. Deceased was married to Edwin Guess August 26, 1879, by Rev. I. S. Winters. From this union four children were born, John and Ernest of Akron, Mabel Peterson of Lee township and Grace Ferguson of Salineville. Among others left to mourn with the grief-stricken husband are 17 grandchildren, three brothers, Simeon and Oscar Shepherd of Carroll County and Herbert Shepherd of Jefferson County; one sister, Mrs. Bertha Hall of Pittsburgh, and an aged mother in the hospital at Massillon. Mrs. Guess was an exceptionally intelligent and well-read woman. Her home was always one of the most cheerful and hospitable in the community. She was faithful and active in church work and in everything that made for the betterment of the community. Her cheerful, sunny disposition always made her presence desirable in every social circle and company. she was one of the charter members of Straw Camp Grange, No. 1204, organized in 1875, and will be sadly missed as one of the leading spirits of that organization. With her husband she was twice a delegate to the state grange. In her death the Grim Reaper has made a regretted gap in the community circle. The influence of Mrs. Guess' pure, noble life and kindly, genial disposition on all who knew her. Mr. Guess and family have the sincere and heartfelt sympathy of all their friends and neighbors in their sore bereavement. This information was researched by Richard Paul Culler of Carrollton, Ohio.
