Turner, a resident of Moravia and vicinity for more than 80 years, died at his home here at 11 o'clock Sunday night, following an illness that has extended over a period of more than four years. At the time of his passing he was 82 years, 4 months and 16 days of age. The death of Mr. Turner marks the passing of Moravia's oldest businessman and one of the few who had been in business here for more than 40 years. More than 41 years ago he entered business in Moravia and throughout these many years was unusually active in various enterprises. Mr. Turner was born in Davis County but came to Appanoose County when a very small child. He was reared on the farm south of Moravia and following his marriage to Mary Luse continued in that occupation for a number of years. Sept. 5, 1896 he became associated with W. H. Trussell in the lumber business, having purchased the interest of Mr. Eslinger in the firm of Trussell & Eslinger. A few months later Mr. Trussell dropped out of the company and the firm became known as Turner & Son with C. A. Turner as the junior partner. This partnership has continued throughout the years and was thus known at the time of T. J. Turner's death. Soon after acquiring his interest in the lumber business, Mr. Turner began adding other lines such as hardware, farm implements, etc. In 1900-1901, he erected the present Turner brick building and in 1901 added a stock of furniture. In 1902 the firm entered the undertaking business. Thus the firm continued to expand and engage in various phases of activity which included dealing in lumber and building materials, hardware, farm implements, harness, buggies, automobiles, furniture, etc., all of which with the exception of buggies and automobiles, they continued to the present time. In 1936, at the time of the building of the Turner Funeral Home, T. J. Turner relinquished his interest in the undertaking business. His life has been an active one. Always a hard worker, he has been a builder, morally and materially, for his own interest and the welfare of the community. At different times he served on the town council, school board and committees of various kinds, which were destined to promote the good of the community. He was also active in the work of the church. During the past four years, because of ill health, he has been restrained from active physical participation in the business life of the community. However, he retained his interest to the end, giving council and aid where he could. Mr. Turner's death was the first in his immediate family, including his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, which is a remarkable record. Mr. and Mrs. Turner celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary last August. Besides his wife, he is survived by the following children: C.A. Turner of Moravia; Mrs. W. R. Benson of Longmont, Colorado; Mrs. George Halden and Mrs. L. B. Hiatt of Moravia; two brothers, B.E. Turner and U. G. Turner of Moravia; three sisters, Mrs. W. L. Hicks and Mrs. J. J. Ullem of Moravia, and Mrs. Effie Long of Oklahoma; besides six grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, many other relatives and a host of friends. Obituary Thomas J., son of Wm. D. and Jemima E. Turner, was born in Davis County, Iowa, Dec. 1, 1855 and passed from this life April 17, 1938 at the age of 82 years, 4 months and 16 days. On Sept. 5, 1877 he united marriage with Mary Luse. To this union was born four children, one son and three daughters. He was reared on a farm four miles south of Moravia and after his marriage took up farming for himself and followed it until September, 1896, at which time he entered the retail business in Moravia which he continued as long as his health would permit and retained his interest in the business he established and built up until the time of his departure. He took an interest in his community and did his part in its advancement. In early life he professed faith in Christ and united with the church, and being a believer in better society was a supporter of, not only the church, but all of the betters things of life as he saw them. He was a kind and affectionate husband and father, a good neighbor and a friend to all. He is survived by his companion; one son, three daughters, six grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, two brothers, three sisters, a number of nieces and nephews and distant relatives besides a host of friends. Funeral services were held from the Turner Funeral Home Wednesday afternoon, April 20, at 2:00 o'clock, Rev. Chas. L. Ellis officiating. Interment at Moravia Cemetery.
